I want to know one thing... Why Americans almost always INSIST on remaking British sitcoms, when the british just re-run American ones. Do we understand more jokes than our American cousins, or do you insist on trying to take the credit for Brit genius?

I'm American and I hate American comedies for the reason they're more physical and make jokes for the sake of making jokes. Britcoms are more situational where the jokes are a result of the action instead of the destination of the action.

Because American sitcoms are more physical and less cerebral, or at least less situational, they rely more on the characters in the shows for all the jokes. But when people get tired of the characters there is no where for them to go. Because Britcoms are more situational they can always get caught up in another situation. So we lose more American shows because they become dull and thus we're always looking for new things.

But also, I think we have a lot more networks to fill spots with, I think we need a greater volume of shows than England does.

BTW, the first episode I ever saw years ago was "sdrawkcaB" on public broadcasting. Despite laughing myself silly I didn't see any Red Dwarf for another 5 years, but never forgot it.

The first time I ever saw Red Dwarf was when I was about 8 and it was the episode in which Ace Rimmer sky surfs on a crocodile. I didn't find it particularly amusing, I think I was a bit young and I didn't get some of the 'in' jokes. I then saw it in the Radio Times about 2 or 3 years later and had a faint recollection ofit and thought I'd give it another go. I found it hilarious this time, even though it was the same episode! Go figure, 2 or 3 years later and it's the same episode... Ah well, I've never looked back since

I mentioned 'Queeg' earlier as one of my favourite episodes, I forgot to include 'Apocolypse' [I think that's what it's called when Kryten trys to create a dove program to destroy the apocolypse virus. It's set in 'the west', fantastic fun

If you've got some money to burn, head to www.propstore.co.uk and look through the various Red Dwarf props you can buy. You have been warned though, a simple envelope with an address on for Lister, David / Floor 13 / Red Dwarf [or something along those lines costs £75! (it has it in US$ too). You can however buy some of the cat's suits! for a mere £1000 or so or one of krytens hands for £500... Go on, you know you want to!

And to answer vetrix - Queeg and Apocolypse I've already mentioned, I also like backwards, and I've always liked the end of polymorph, when you see that the pod has 'contents 2' written on the side and a beach ball goes bouncing down the corridoor And those are just the ones (except for apocolypse) from the first 3 series, I can't remember the names of many of the others...

Sir Spectre: Thanks for that info..... Mind you, there are a lot of channels over here too (OK some are American, but still we have a load).

Anyway, in that case, does that mean that Sitcoms (American Sitcoms) tend to last a lot a shorter than Britcoms? I know Red dwarf has 52 episodes, a Britcom called Bread has 74 and one called Allo Allo had 90. Only Fools and Horses (A British staple) has close to 100 I think. Fawlty Towers (arguably one of the best, however only had 12).

My point is, with the exception of Friends, Cheers and Frasier I am unaware of any sitcoms (if you exclude The Simpsons and Futurama - as cartoons) from across the pond with any sort of longevity, whereas I can name quite a lot from here (mind you I am English and am therefore more aware of the Britcoms).

I still however, getting back to the thread, believe Red dwarf was the best. Can I ask everyone who has seen at least two full series worth (12 eps) what their fave episode is.

I like Backwards, but prefer Future Echoes.

While RD is available on DVD, I am spending my money on increasing my movie collection (now that I have a DVD Player), and buying Futurama. I just picked up Season 2 for $30 less that its retail price! Finally, I found a bargain! This is an historic day for those people who know other people who acquire bargains but never get any themselves.

As an American I can't name anymore series than those three. I honestly don't know what's on anymore. I only watch my DVDs or Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" replete with cartoons made for adults that are so damn hilarious I look forward to every Sunday night when they're on.

It came out in November, series 4 due February, 5 due due September, 6 due Jan 2005, 7 in may and 8 December. Don't quote me, it was a couple months since I checked the site (can't even remmeber wehat site I found it on, think it was reddwarf.co.uk).
