**FIX** for many problems playing FL!
The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...
fix freelancer this way:
Uninstall frelancer. Put cd in a safe place.
Install Raven shield (or any other great game and enjoy playing.
Ocassionally check to see if Micr$oft has a patch for the audio problem yet.
P.S. I tried install/uninstall Winxp, Freelancer, different codecs and reg edit.
Screw that. Games are for playing not spending 10-15 hrs fixing.

So I tried the reinstalling the Fr.. codec and it worked...I got past mission 3 and all was good, I can hear all of the voices and other sounds (I even restarted to hear all the ones I missed)...until I get to the point where the Navy is chasing me. All of a sudden when VanPelt is supposed to talk, I can't hear him any longer and then after he is supposed to speak the second time the whole game quits showing the windows error reporting dialogue. (I can't hear him the second time, but I can hear the girl speak in between the times he has to talk enroute to the second waypoint in the badlands). I have two installs of DirectX9, Windows XP on my partitioned hd and I have tried this on both and it has crashed on both. Here is what it says in the FLSpew file after the crash:

Although unlike you chaps i havent had an audio problem with freelancer, i enjoy troublshooting, (yeah i know im sad) so i read though all six pages of this thread and noticed some annomalys it would seem you need the advanced version of the fraunhofer codec, i also note that on my own system running xp that the prioraty isnt set to "1" as electric brain suggested but "10", im not saying that brain is wrong but it might be worth trying, it is also set to use this codec, i have various ripping software i use for dvd sound and video, and dosent seem to cause any problems, i will next try to recreate the problems you guys are haveing and try to supply a clear answer, and solution.

Hi!!!
I 've got the Frauhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (PRO) installed and XP and Soundblaster Live.
And the same sound problem stucked at the third mission with the police ships.
I have the codec removed ( from the Control Panel ->Sounds and Audio Devices -> Hardware -> Audio Codecs -> Properties ) and installed the one in the Redit folder of the CD-ROM ( wmfdist.exe ) and everything works fine now!!!!
Rigth now the new codec has the same name but it's not the PRO one but it's newer version of the ADVANCED one.
I have the Liveware 2.0 if that matters???
Anyway thanks all of you for the ideas.

Another way to get speech working,
Im using windows xp with via audio drivers and nimo installed.
step 1. Uninstall Freelancer.
step 2. Go to the following directory, C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the file “l3codecp.acm”. If there happens to be another file named “l3codeca.acm”, delete this too. or any what starts with l3code...
If your system is Windows 98 or ME, open the system.ini file located in your system folder; C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Delete ONLY the line that starts with “msacm.l3acm=”. In the case of the Nimo codec pack, this will read “msacm.l3acm=l3codecp.acm”
If your system is Windows 2000 or XP, open the system registry editor (regedit) from the RUN command window. I.E. start button, run, type regedit, hit ok.
Locate and delete the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm
Load the Freelancer installation CD and locate the REDIST folder. Within the REDIST folder, double click on the file named “WMFADist.exe” and follow on-screen instructions.
Install Freelancer.
