4. Select "Fraunhoffer MPEG Layer ..." codec

I dont have ANYTHING like that!!

I removed the Fraun... codec and nothing I do reinstalls it. Freelancer now has no sound whatsoever.

The l3codeca.acm file is reinstalled by running the wm8 & wm9 dists but the codec still does not show up in the audio properties control panel.

I've restarted, reinstalled Freelancer, etc.

Any suggestions?

Go here, it will give you the fran. codec download. Afterwards go to control panel and then sound & audio and go to properties, etc.. to get to the codec lists and it will say in big letters "FRANHOFFER CODEC" prioritise it to one and your off and runnin!

OK, i have tried EVERY damn "fix" for the sound-bug --> NOTHING WORKS, AAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) Didnt even have the Frau-whatever codec --> DLed and installed it : NO CHANGE.
2) Went through each step-by-step guide : NO CHANGE.
3)Trying to rename/delete "l3codeca.acm" and "l3codecp.acm", "Files in use by Windows".
4) DLed and TRIED to install "wma8_redist.exe" and "wma9_redist.exe", error message from "wma8_redist.exe"

Any sign of a patch or do i have to go postal on Microw*****s ??

(if it helps - UK version, Win98se and latest drivers for graphics and sound)

I installed this **** and now my sound dont work whatsoever

registering just to say that the registry fix worked for me. (Right On Commander !)

(clean boot-don't start anything, regedit, reboot)

If you have installed the Fraunhoffer MP3 codec that comes with the Nimo Codec pack then you will have problems with the sound. The way that I got around it was to delete l3codeca.acm, and all similar named files (ie. l3codecx.ax etc.) from Windows\System32 and then run the file 'WMFDIST.EXE' from the REDIST folder on the CD.

Does any technician look here? I've used the fascinating way, just it ripped off all sounds and music instead of gunfire. Good work, I could hear the music at least sometimes, no I can't fully. At least if the game wouldn't crash when I press Alt+Tab to start some ambient...

SO THIS IS HOW DEAF PEOPLE PLAY A COMPUTERE GAME??

My god, bought this game cos it looked like the old based Elite
wich i played long ago.
I have a new computer, with Gforce4, SB live, 2,4Ghz after last 7 years
still using my old computer wich bearly handled the game Patience....
bit overdone but trying to explain her.
Anyhow i installed the game and played the SP missions with sound and
no image problems wich look like a old 8mm movie.
Although when i started the game it allways reminded me that i didnt have
the newest driver for my gforce.
So after playing all the mission, i thought, well lets try to download the newest
driver......
** I still wish until today that i didnt do that**
After installing the PC went postal and to make a long story short, i had to
install windows 98 again plus all the other software for SB live, Gforce etc.

After that day I dont have the full sound anymore I used to hear before.
I start reading the forums here(yes all the 7 pages) and tried, yes really
tried every solution...from adjusting system.ini files to Fraunhauser till
installing the new files Electricbrain was so friendly to link here...removing
codec here or placing codec there..(in FL exe files and DLL files)...and
a whole lot of cobinations of above.
Today i give up.....the only sound i hear now...is in a bar...and the little
words a bartender is trying to say: "....stranger...." Trent : "im not looking for....."
Before sometimes after trying a new solution, i would here the weapons only
or the speach and weapons....

Im lost and im afraid nobody has a really good solution?

For anyone, who hasn't Fraunhoffer IIS codec: it seems only way to repair the sound problem is to download it, install it, set to it primary priority and then try the way mentioned in the title. It worked for me, at least (I have unupgraded W98, Avance ALS120 soundcard, DirectX 8.1).

Finally it works fine.

I tried several things. At first none would work. Just when I was about to give up (after reinstalling freelancer over 3 times) I decided to give it one more go. And did what ElectricBrain suggested and guess what...this time it worked.

I tried it before two times, but it wouldn't work, I tried the microsoft thing in the readme file, none would work.

It works like a peach now, I'm very happy and to everyone who is still trying, keep trying, do everything possible.

One tip though, i'm not sure if this is what did it for me, but when I uninstalled I noticed that it still keeps the folder in my documents, even though you selected the delete savegames option during uninstall. I deleted it manually and after that I reinstalled the game, tried the way ElectricBrain suggested and this time his method worked. Also I deleted all the audiocodecs in my list. (except for one, I couldn't delete that one)


Hope this is some help for someone.

did you guys tried the 1.1 patch from freelancer full version. Before i iinstalled that one i did have some sound problems, at fixed points no sound.
Now i have the 1.1 pätch installed the problems have gone away.

Here's what I've done with succes having the same sound et mission 3 problem :

- Uninstall my Fraunhofer codec (Pro) (using multimedia's settings)
- Didn't reboot
- Installed the "WMFDist.exe" from the REDIST folder located on the game cd
[Installed Fraunhofer codec was advanced version
- Launched the game...........No more pbs.
