**FIX** for many problems playing FL!

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

I would just like to add that The soundblaster official drivers SUCK.

I have a new WinXP install. sound works fine with default drivers supplied with windows.
When i installed the latest official drivers from the creative website sound quiality went down.

Talking & radio communications are still the same, its anoying static thats been introduced in the thruster sound, especially when you do a turn under thrusters. Most annoying.

Its still staticlike when i turn sound acceleration down too. It dissapears with sound acceleration completely off, but then other sounds you get while buying/selling stuff are all FUBARED up.

Dumbass soundblaster drivers *GRRRR*

I got rid of all sound problems on my NVIDIA card after I downloaded the l3codeca.acm codec from http://www.station-network.de/ and copied it to ../Freelancer/EXE/. I have a lot of codecs on my WinXP installation (even the original Frauenhofer codec which seems to be different of the one MS gave on the CD), and I found it the easiest way to perform it. You have nothing to change or switch in any system tools.
(First of all I have installed the codec from the redist dir on the CD, but in mission 3 the Reinländers didn't got hostile, so I tried it with this way and it worked.)

Please follow these steps if some sounds and speech are still missing after installation:
• Uninstall any 3rd party codec pack or the Nimo Codec pack from your system.
• Uninstall Freelancer.
• Go to the following directory, C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the file “l3codecp.acm”. If there happens to be another file named “l3codeca.acm”, delete this too.
• If your system is Windows 98 or ME, open the system.ini file located in your system folder; C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Delete ONLY the line that starts with “msacm.l3acm=”. In the case of the Nimo codec pack, this will read “msacm.l3acm=l3codecp.acm”
• If your system is Windows 2000 or XP, open the system registry editor (regedit) from the RUN command window.
• Locate and delete the following key: \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm
• Load the Freelancer installation CD and locate the REDIST folder. Within the REDIST folder, double click on the file named “WMFADist.exe” and follow on-screen instructions.
• Install Freelancer.

Do it this way , it works and its worth giving up whatever it changes to feel the true greatness of this game

First off system info: HP 2.4 Ghz,WinXP Home, onboard sound(Avance'97),Intel 845GL onboard graphic chipset-no problems. I was going to install a Soundblaster Audigy Gamer but after reading about all the problems---makes one think twice. Avance(Realtek now for sound) does have a sound codecs update-when I did this the sound is better now except for the guns firing, don't get a continuous firing sound or hear all guns but when you turn while firing I noticed you hear the guns on that side of your turn firing though I didn't hear them while firing straight ahead---is this 3d sound? All the other sounds, voices, SFX and such work great.
Stay frosty out there!!! "Check"-Trent

Registered just to reply about a fix.
I tried the MS fix, but it didn't work, even with acceleration completely off.
I then read somewhere to install the Kazaa codec pack. This worked only partially with voices and effects cutting out.
After reading through this forum, I got an idea.
I started regedit and went to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32and changed the key msacm.l3acm from the value l3codecp.acm to l3codeca.acm.
I then rebooted, went back to the audio codec properties, and saw l3codeca.acm there.
I just double-clicked it and ticked the "use this audio codec".
Started Freelancer and it worked great.
This may foul up your high-bit audio/video encoding, but I haven't tested beyond this posting.
All this trouble will make me think twice about buying a MS game ever again.

HI
I did the fix and made freelancer very stable. But now its screwed the sound in other games and playing dvd's. So my question is, how do I revert back to defualt?

OK, I noticed after testing my "fix" is that it fixes freelancer and meeses up everything else.
I wrote that I hadn't tested much after posting that message, and well, it didn't work.
So, this is what I did to get it fixed for real on my buddies system(I hope!)

First I uninstalled all my 3rd-party codecs.

Secondly, I uninstalled Freelancer

Third, I followed the instructions by ElectricBrain (only problem was, the Fraunhoffer codec no longer shows up in the hardware/audio codecs properties, see below)

Fourth, I re-installed Freelancer

Fifth step, the sound still didn't work, because the registry was still pointing to the wrong codec.

Final step, changed the string msacm.l3acm at the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 from the value l3codecp.acm to l3codeca.acm
(The codec will not show up in control panel as fraunhof, only its actual filename)

I don't recommend the final step if your sound works after the fourth step, of course.

Played some videos, Empire Earth, and Freelancer, and all worked perfectly.
Don't know what will happen when reinstalling 3rd party codecs. Haven't tested any, and I will leave that decision up to the computers owner, so it won't be my fault. ;p

Hmm... how do you do for Windows XP?
When i have escorted the Artifact Transports in Mission 3, and i and Juni are going to Callifornia Minor, we get to the Rheinland Valkyries, but Juni ain't talking and the Rheinlanders are neutral. When i shoot at them, they get red, and i get Mission Failed. Is there any patch for Windows XP?

Starhunter: i have the same problem...They just stand(er...float) there, staring at you!... Why does a stupid sound thing mess up the whole game!? I mean, they could at least do SOMETHING rather than just floating around in space doing nothing!Ugh... They could atleast have done some subtitles in the game...
