Stew - I stand corrected

I think you might be right about the joint US/Japan thing.

Maybe I should just go and try Starlancer

you should... but hold it.. you must have a joystick to ENJOY the game that was what i have when i first bought it..if you dont.. wait untill someone make a freelancer control mod.. if that does not happen... im not gonna play it till that happens.

I Don't want To end up in corpse early because YOU were daydreaming.. any bad faction pilot

Geez. This is how religions get thier starts, someone takes a simple, basic, and outright fact, then elaborates on it layer by layer to the point where some rabbi tosses enough money to fund a wedding party suddenly is pulling millions of fish out of his butt and turning the water into wine... The manual says five, the intro says five, the in-game conversations say five... if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck... is it a Buick LeSabre? Nope.

The in-game conversation said eight. Some junior programmer's screw up if you ask me.

The intro could neither show the entire war nor all of the Alliance' efforts to escape it. Eight works fine.

I wouldn't say that a joystick is 100% essential. I played, completed and enjoyed StarLancer using a joypad (yes, I'm a heathen non-joysticker!).

But whatever control system you use, StarLancers still a really great game, and I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Eight works fine? We've had a thread of over 100 posts because we can't decide what nations would go into the extra ships!
As the RUMOUR also states that the sleeper ships left from Pluto, I really would take it with a pinch of salt. They launched from a moon of Jupiter for crying out loud! If the map in the intro isn't enough to demonstrate that (Coalition appear to have several battles before securing Mars, then shoot over to Jupiter which is when it switches back to the sleeper ships and the battle), then surely the fact that Jupiter is clearly visible in the background does! Now, if the rumour has the very starting point of the sleeper ships wrong, why would the number of ships be any different?

Someone said if it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck then it most probably is a duck. The intro says 5 sleeper ships. You only see five. It says they all make it out successfully. If the last traces of a nation's culture were obliterated, don't you think they'd at least give it a mention? You can say 'well it was distorted by the 800 years gap' as much as you like, but I doubt very much that Digital Anvil had that in mind when making it. They wanted to let everyone know exactly what happened for humans to end up in Sirius, otherwise it wouldn't be part of the Lancer series. It'd just be a game with 'lancer' in the title. There are only two possibilities for that rumour, and neither is that it is solid, cold, hard evidence:

1. The person who said it was drunk/stoned/stupid, therefore it is wrong. As he said they launched from Pluto, this is very likely.
2. It was an old rumour from the original storyline/an experimental storyline which they forgot to take out. Also likely, though I don't see why they'd be writing all these rumours before they'd finished the coding.

While its a nice theory, and it does offer expansion potential, I really don't think it happened.
And as for you lumping Spain and Italy together, think it through. Two completely different cultures, with completely different histories. You're just catagorising them as the same thing because of proximity. On that ground, America shouldn't have got its own sleeper ship. Canada is on top, therefore they get their own instead and America gets thrown in because they're nearby. Or even better, South America is exactly the same as North America, why not lump them together?
I'm sure I'd be just as offended if you suggested Britain should have been merged with France because they are close, as someone from Spain or Italy would be if they read this. I'd guess that the only reason they've named their planets as they have is because of Spain's historic presense in the Mediterrainian. Either that or something about those places reminded them of the planets. For example, Planet Malta is a rocky, craggy, warm place. Anyone who's ever been to Malta will concur that is pretty much how it is in real life. Or perhaps the developers are just not as good with geography than they thought they were...

I see what you mean by Italy and Spain having two different cultures.. It's not really more of a "Oh.. They are sort of the same people.. let's put them on the same ship". The whole Italy and Spain on the Hispania is more of a "Oh.. We're getting blown to **** here. Let's get as many people of different cultures on the same ship so we can all survive." It would be the same if there were only four sleeper ships available. British, Canadia, Australian and Americans may not be the same, but they would all go on the same transport for survival.

This is just my opinion:
Why to put all the eggs in one basket??
I just don't get it. I wont put a whole culture in a sole ship, it doesn´t make any sense to me. What if they all got killed?. Oh bad luck!!
And I disagree with the names of the Outcasts and Corairs planets. At least of course that the designers had decided to put in the hispania the rest of the mankind...
That would be the answer for that sabotage or why am I gone to destroy the less important ship?
They are not as powerful as the rest anyway, right??

Good Luck out there[![!

If the Allaiance was composed of at least 8 countries, United States, Britan, Germany, Japanese, Spanish/Mexican, let's say Italian, French, and China, who composed the Coalition? Kenya, Nigeria, Canada, Egypt I don't know if that makes sense. Do you think they might have had enough funds to construct a sleeper ship No offense or anything to anybody.

Ok, ok, STOP!
Can't you all see? The Digital Anvil MUST have planned this from the beggining...
I mean - I LOVE games that have a good, unsaid/unfinished mystery feeling to them...
The guys at the DA ARE aware of this, so they've decided to put in something for us to think [and argue about. What I'm trying to tell you is:
Let it go. It has been a nice thread [130+ but the smartest you can get with this
is that you will [if ever find out in a sequel/expansion/completely different game... Who knows? Maybe they'll decide to make an RTS/RPG next time 'round

p.s: I'm NOT trying to say that forums aren't for discussing stuff, I'm saying that
THIS ONE IS GOING NOWHERE.

LOL. I'm Indonesian, and I can't speak for Africa or Middle East,or India but Indonesia as it is now, is very, VERY capitalistic and right-winged. It might be corrupt and plagued with religious extremism and threatened to go Balkan, but it historically had bad rub with communism (bloody, failed coup by communists). The existence of communism is virtually banned.

Please recheck your sources before you make your next "educated" assumption.

Guess what, my dad's from Indonesia, he was born in 1943 in a Japanese concentration camp, he knows everything about the Independence War with the dutch (which my family is). After World War 2 and during the Cold War, the Indonesian ties with the Soviets were stronger then with the West. I am not sure what side Soekarno would have chosen if the Cold War became hot, but my best guess is, that if the Soviets would destroy the West, Indonesia, and a whole lot more countries in South America, Asia and Africa would choose for the communists. And like you're saying, like Indonesia and India are NOW. In both Starlancer and Freelancer, the Soviet Union did'nt collapse. So then we must look at the world as it was before 1990/1991.

Western Alliance:

France
Italy

Thats the thread answered rite there. The Hispania musta been spain. Or the alliance felt bad for the south and central american nuetrals and told them they were leaving. Maybe why the Outcasts were so quick to suspect anuther house. Most of the other houses probably didnt want them coming cuz they didnt even help fight!
