Freelancer Plot is Retarted!

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Americans with the best technology? Why? What, did they store their bank accounts securely within the sleeper ship? I thought the point of those five ships heading off to A Place Unknown (tm) was that they could start anew. Now I'm wonderin' about the Hispania and John Leguizamo's joke about why there aren't any Latinos in Star Trek: "It just shows that they're trying to get rid of us!" =p

ahem, "flyingcanopener" is not a good name if you're looking to show your maturity; so don't be surprised if you have some jokes thrown your way.

Post Thu Apr 03, 2003 2:48 am

Actually, it is quite mature:

In 1942 No 6 Squadron re-equipped with the Hurricane 11D, fitted with 40mm cannon for ‘tank busting’, an activity at which the Squadron became so successful that they gained the name ‘Flying Can Openers’. The can-opener emblem is still carried by the Squadron aircraft in addition to the Squadron badge.

It's in memory of a pen pal of mine's dad who died in a training accident while flying with No. 6 Squadron. Sounds quite mature to me, asparagus

Great way to introduce yourself to the forum! you did however leave out that your copy of the game is warezed ^_^

:/ You've proved my wrong. Congratulations. Now that you mention it, I do remember those heavy canon in Il-2 Sturmovik. Although I don't think the Russians called themselves "can openers."

Just so its clear,

The whole nomads blowing up sol and general whatever going and telling them about the nomads never happened. If you paid attention to orillion when you meet him tells you that he was a top pilot for the liberty navy. he found out that his CO (Commanding Officer) was controlled by a nomad and stole libertys new experemental battleship (the "Osiris" and founded the order to stop the nomads.

Sadistic, I think it's quite believable. A lot of Americans don't know why we are kicking the **** out of Iraq right now (when asked: "Uh, 911?", and after a hundred years, it could easily become a case of "Well, they killed the base my Dad worked on, I hate them so I'll go kill them" or whatever.

Anyway, aliens are cliche, yeah, but there were some fresh ideas about how they were part of the story. Instead of being some badass humongous militaristic race who's goal is to wipe out all life or some crap, they're actually quite weak, and have to break down their enemies from the inside. Also, the Nomads aren't neccessarily the agressors. IIRC, they viewed humans as a threat. The colonies were growing rapidly, and were much stronger than the Nomads. I bet they removed Sol's destruction from the intro because it would make sense with the Nomad's motivations. One race in a massive civil war would hardly bother them. Destroying them AFTER the colony ships left wouldn't make sense, because the Alliance was better at expanding and colonizing than the Coalition. Just my theory...

For the sake of grammar... it's retarded. Not "retarted".

That would be uh... "spelling" not "grammar".

Wars are retarded. They are started by a bunch of reatards who are on a quest to eliminate those who think they are retards and those who know they are retards.

The sole idea that human civilization can sustain to the 31st century is retarded, for that we shall annihilate ourselves long before that.

Post Thu Apr 03, 2003 9:19 pm

hey, we've made it this far without blowing the world apart; I'm sure we could make it till the 31st century

Post Thu Apr 03, 2003 9:26 pm

Say that to the Mayans or the Aztecs...
The only Alien involvement in human history will be to catalogue our extinction.

What do they have to do with Freelancer?

Post Thu Apr 03, 2003 10:03 pm

Interesting post FCO. When I first read your reply I thought: "Here we go again".
But it turned out quite a interesting discussion. To bad people didn't response the way I hoped

Someone has most probably pointed this out already but the word is Retarded not retarted. And the game my friends is far from retarded, it is what it has been designed to be and that is a classic space opera. It rocks.

Post Fri Apr 04, 2003 2:45 am

well, technically, the game *could* be called 'retarded' as the game does take a while to complete

Post Fri Apr 04, 2003 3:10 am

this has got to be one of the funniest threads ive ever read! muahahahaha .... thanks for the laugh ....

IMHO the plot is somewhat retarded! hahahaha i was quite disappointed to find out it was because of aliens .... i thought there was some major human element involved ... some conspriacy theory ... u know ... a babylon 5 type space saga but without aliens! ..... (i didnt see the "original" intro. so i didnt know aliens were involved till fatso,

lighted up like a xmas tree
... hehehehe )

as someone was saying, sol still exists ... there was no general coming to tell the people about the destruction of sol.... the intro is completely diff and the original intro/storyline no longer plays any part .... here is my reasoning ..

1. If the original intro did happen, why cant the nomads just come in full force and wipe us out? they blew up our entire solar system in one shot! there are only 40+ systems in sirius and only half of that are major systems... a few of those nomad solar system destroyers and we are kapooootz!

2. the answer to my first point is simply this, they changed the story from an invading alien force, to one that was dormant until we came across. its all in the storyline!!! Havent you people been paying any attention to the storyline in the game?!?!?! or do you all just post without actually having played through it!? after reading majority of the posts, i guess i should know the answer to that one! hehehehe

anyway .... orillion (or some other guy, dont remember who) explains to whiney trent that an expedition team from rheinland came across an uncharted planet/system. When they returned people who came in contact with them started acting different... blah blah blah blah. hence the creation of the order when orilion found out what was going on... (someone mentioned this earlier too ... )

turns out the nomads are like gatekeepers or some **** ... left behind by a superior alien race .... what happened to the superior alien race? went on a holiday! who knows?! the stupid irritating doctor smarty pants explains that the artifact, that the nomads have been trying to acquire, was created by the superior alien race.... its a key to some new fangled way of travelling through space time.... and the ending seemed a little rushed in the way that stupid little artifact (with a little modification) could just suck out all the nomads! ...

woosh! .....

so there you have it .... the freelancer storyline ..... blah ....

really dissapointing ending ....

feels like they rushed it coz of their budget or lack of time or whatever .... its a real shame... coz the build up was pretty good ... eventhough the plot twist with the aliens was kinda cliche (like i said, i didnt see the original intro)

hope this clears up all the misconceptions of sol being destroyed ... i guess u will probably get to see the coallition come after the alliance! ... or they might do another alien thingy where the superior race comes back to check on their Sirius Sector and find it infested with hairless apes flying around in tin cans! .... hehehehe

time to whip out the can openers!!!!!
