Well, I see that I caused quite a stir with my topic. First off, I can't beleive that anyone took me 100% seriously, especially after I mentioned "evil garden gnomes"...
To answer your first question, yes, I do own Freelencer, and I love it. It's a hoot! But I am not that far into it, hence the reference to the fact that I'm trying to stay away from the Bounty Hunters in Bretonia.
As for the people who say "Who cares about the plot, it's a GAME!" or "Freelancer is THE game." You are inadvertently making my point. You see, the plot makes "a game" "THE game". Let me give you an example by comparing Half Life and Quake 3. Both are incredibly fun games, but Half Life is Head and Shoulders above Quake 3 is its plot. If you don't understand, think about all the times you were thinking how to respond to the next wave of aliens, or plot twist in HL, and compare them to the number of times you were thinking about "Gee, what pillar will Xaero will come out of next?" You ARE Gordan Freeman, and every new situation is another plot twist that you will never forget. That was the plot in Action. From what I've seen in Freelancer so far, I wasn't drawn in until I had to run from the Liberty Navy with Juni. I love when a game grags my mind kicking and screaming, and won't let go until the game is done. It sure beats having to think about life's problems...
As for the whole Aliens thing, I believe that great games can be made in a Space setting without aliens involved. For example, Starlancer. It's a rather interesting comcept that only 200+ years in the future, Earth could be in an interplanetary war with factions still based on Earth. It's gritty, realistic, and I love it. If you think it can't work, just look at the Mobile Suit Gundam series from Japan, or just look at Battletech- it doesn't need aliens because they've armed themselves to the hilt, and can blow each others' planets away if it weren't for that blasted Ares Convention
. I just think that the Starlancer idea was great, and to spread it on a grander scale (The Sirius Sector) would be great, and set up a third game with the Coalition and Alliance battling not only for Earth but both Interstellar Empires (You can't tell me that in 800 years, Russia and Co. ocouldn't make themselves an empire)...
Which leads me to my final point, I haven't religiously followed the development of Freelancer (I do have a life), so after seeing the old opening (Didn't know it was
that old), and not viewing the actual opening of the game (I always skip that, maybe I should rethink that policy) I kinda jumped the gun, but it seems that Digital Anvil is quiet on the subject of the existence of the Solar System, so I may still have some hope for an inter-humanity war as a third installment. If not, where would the franchise go, if at all?
As for people making wirecracks about my handle, please go through puberty, and when you finally reach a maturity level above a gifted asparagus, then we can talk.
