What systems are u guys running?

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

I'm on a typical living-entirely-on-student-loans sort of budget and couldn't update my system in the past three years:

P3-700E overclocked to 933mHz on an ancient BX board
768MB PC133 SDRAM
Creative GeForce 2 GTS vid card
6-year-old Diamond MX200 Aureal sound card
three-year-old 7800RPM IDE HDs.
Win2K

And Freelancer actually runs pretty respectably on this dinosaur with all details maxed at 1024x768@32-bit color.

The only time I've seen it turn into a slideshow is one mission late during the storyline when it was obviously very busy (as far as I'll go to remain spoiler-free).

It's probably the 768MB RAM that is managing to keep things smooth. Just about the only thing I can't do is FSAA.

Compaq Deskpro w/
- Pentium II 500MHz
- 256M RAM
- 10G HDD (1/2 Win2K, 1/2 RH 8.0)
- on-board sound
- ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2x (4M!)

Now, this poor system runs fine except for the video. Having only 4M instead of the minimum required 16M causes some interesting problems.
a) The main menu and other menu background is white.
b) The table for multipler is blank (the scroll bar functions and I can read descriptions of servers, but no names....)
c) During gameplay the shield and hull status bars don't exist
d) Astroids have a triangular skirt until very close
e) During conversations, the models become transparent and you can see through them as well as all the parts....makes for some interesting captures.

Every forum I go to eventually has this kind of thread...anyway, prepare to stare and drool, ok?

Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz 800MHz FSB w/ 512k Cache
Asus P4C800 Deluxe
1GB DDR PC-3200 RAM
200GB Western Digital UltraATA 7200RPM Harddrive
(won't go into the cd-rom drives, not really important)
ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB AGP 8x
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
19" Monitor
Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 500-Watt THX Speakers
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Ok, so technically speaking I don't have the computer yet, but it is supposed to ship in 2-3 business days What a quick way to blow $3400. This system is an upgrade from my current 2.0GHz P4, 512MB RAM, 80GB Harddrive, GeForce3 Ti-200.

Hrmm...my system...I don't get to brag often, but here goes...

I run Windows XP Professional on:
-Dual P-III 1 ghz processors on an MSI motherboard running at an average of 32-38 degrees Celcius
-1024 mb pc-133 SD-RAM
-Sound Blaster Live! Value
-GeForce 4 Ti4600 (128 mb DDR-RAM)
-Generic 10/100 ethernet card (why pay for a 3-com??)
-40 gb system hard disk with 80 gb games hard disk, both are Western Digital 7200 RPM drives
-19" Mag Monitor
-Labtec speakers (two satelites and a sub)
-Acer 16x DVD/48x CD drive
-Acer 24x12x48 cd burner
-One 3.5" floppy drive (not even sure that still works though...)
-Memorex standard 101 key keyboard
-Logitech Marbleman Trackball (I can't play games without it)
-The case is aluminum with 5 fans, but I'm sorry to say I didn't mod it myself, it came factory made with the sides cut out and plexi-glass panels put on.
-300 watt power supply
-Nifty rounded cables for all IDE drives and my floppy as well

I run the game at 1600x1200 resolution with maxed out graphics, including FSAA, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Sometimes on MP servers i'm forced to drop down to a measely 1280x1024 because of lag problems (i play from my shcool's LAN connection that occassionally gets bogged down with hundreds of other people on the internet through a dinky 24 megabit connection), but that's not very often. My dad mentioned that in place of a hotrod, i've got my computer...I guess that's true. I'm looking for some neon to put into it. It's taken me three years of upgrading to get this far. My next step will be to upgrade the motherboard and get something snazzier than P-IIIs and make the Dual-P-III's a linux server. It would be really cool to also put in a water cooling system...

So maybe this belongs in the technical support forum or not, I don't know but here goes.

This is directed at all you Audigy 2 Soundcard owners. I've got a live 5.1 soundcard and was thinking of upgrading. I know on a technical level what the differences are between the two cards, but can you HEAR a difference? I mean does the Audigy 2 card actually sound better? I've got Klipsch 4.1 thx cert. speakers and a brand spankin' new digital decoder directly from Klipsch...just in case you were about to ask me what speakers I had. Is the sound crisper, sharper, more pronounced than say on the 5.1 card I've got?

192 SD-RAM

Windows XP Professional
Pentium 4 1.6ghz
512mb PC133 Ram
Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 440/440 64mb
16x8x48 CD-RW
Cheap Verizon DSL (256k) that goes down when the weather's bad (seriously)
17" Monitor
6 Speakers/1 Subwoofer (which isn't really that great since it's a 2.1 speaker system connected with 2 1996-era speakers (that needs it's own separate power) and 2 not-too-old speakers by about 3 or 4 wires)

it's a good system... not great... but Freelancer runs 99% smoothly on it so it's all good

Khaos, you must be insane to fork out $3400 for a brand new 3Ghz machine, when you could have upgraded your current one to almost the same spec for a fraction of the cost ! Ok, you could have only slapped in a 2.6Ghz chip into your 400FSB mobo, but isn't that powerful enough!? When the 1600FSB P5s come out, you're gonna be upgrading again, and that $3400 will have just been burnt cash..........

I dunno, some people have more money than brains !!

"you must be insane to fork out $3400 for a brand new 3Ghz machine,"

No, just have to have a lot of extra cash floating around (which I did). Besides, my brother needed a serious upgrade to his computer, so I'm giving him my old one. Would it have been cheaper to upgrade my system, then buy a totally new one for him (Yes, TOTALLY new, his computer sucks too much to be upgraded)? Maybe, but it'd be close. Also, I'm one of those people that always want to be on the bleeding edge when it comes to computers.
