Middle aged gamers flock to FL?
This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!
Oh yeah?!?! Well I used to play games on my abacus!! HA!!
Seriously, it sounds like this post could turn into the old "When I was your age" discussion. You know, like having to walk 50 miles to school, through 20 feet of snow, uphill both ways, naked...
I can just see it..."When I was your age, our computers didn't have monitors, we had to imagine what was being displayed...and...and...our harddrives could only hold 1 bit....and....and....the keyboard only had two keys...and they were both the letter 'S'....and...and...we didn't have mice, we had RATS! Real ones, yeah! And they would bite and scratch...and, uh, uh..."
LOL!
Those are my thoughts, not yours, I'm WapCaplet[!

37 here almost 38 and I single handedly financed the gaming industry throught the 90s particulaly the combat flight simulators and the Chris Robert's legacy games.........LOL
Jesus... please don't remind me of how much money i left in the hands of greedy game companies. It's insane
Just counted my boxes. I bought more than 90 games in the last 8 years and only a fistful of them are actually budget titles.

I haven't been watching as frequently lately ... been having too much fun playing
FL. Just finished the storyline and now I am having even more fun exporing!
I agree with a lot of your previous comments. I'ts a wonderful game, but it would
be better if it didn't protect me from myself. Don't limit me on what I can buy
(you must be lever 22 to buy this). That's ridiculous. The question is can I afford
it? What if I buy a "level 8" cannon for a "level 3" ship? Well I would expect it to
either not fire at all from lack of power or fire once every 15 seconds. Make me
upgrade my engine power either by a direct purchase, or by a new ship. Make the
really good stuff very, very expensive.
However let me finish with the thought that I am more pleased with FL than any
other game since Elite and Privateer. I'm hoping for a sequel and I'm hoping for X2
to be as good in it's own way. I'm hoping for an IW3. But for now I'm loving FL!

Mid-40s, female, and started playing computer games in the late 70s... but didn't have a computer with graphics until the beginning of the 90s. Till then it was roguelikes (ASCII graphics) and text adventures. And Ms. Pacman in arcades and bars. Ahh, those were the days.
Freelancer is the first game I've played in the space sim genre (I'm more an RPG person these days), but I'm enjoying it much more than I expected... very meditative, those long flights through empty space watching a distant planet slowly get bigger and bigger... and another new system around every corner.

my god, do i feel young and inexperienced. I'll be 17 in 8 days. My first purchased game was Star Trek the Next Generation: A Final Unity. I must say I thought I had some good gaming time in, but listening to you guys with your c-64's, i feel so invalid. Oh well, give me 15 years, I'll put you old fogies to shame.
Freelancer Alpha 1-1, this is Bretonia Police, don't mind if I scan your cargo? Heheh, didn't think so.

29 here. I kinda like this nostalgy threads
I started playing video games in the early 80s and haven't stopped since then. I started out with a CBS colecovision - so one of the first "space simulations" i played was zaxxon i think. Then i had a C64, an AMIGA and afterwards started on PCs in the early 90's. I think Elite on the PC was one of the first games I had. So I played Elite on the C64, the AMIGA and the PC hehe. I think I played most space fighting/trading games like Elite, Sundog, Wing Commander1-5, Freespace, Privateer 1/2 and i still feel attracted to this kind of stuff - I think there were some others, too can't remember their names though. I think Rescue on Fractalus, Koronis Rift, Tau Ceti and Mercenary were some of them. I also love RPGs so the certain amount of role playing that FL provides is nice, too.
It is like one of the posts before said. Either you have the gaming gene or not. All people I know that started playing video games in the 80s are still gaming freaks hehe.

I am 46 years young next month! Started playing games with a TRS-80 MODEL ONE! A whole 16 thousand bytes of memory! Had to type in Basic every new game I wanted to play! But I have been a fan of space based sims since "Wing Commander" what fun! A lot harder to find my fav type of game lateley. Call me old but I do not like GORE! I have pre teens in the house and I will not support that type of gameing! Enjoying Freelancer though!

46 years young here! I've been reading through all these posts and smiling as I recognize games that I've played in the past. My list also includes the original Trek and my all-time faves are the Wing Commander and Privateer series. Besides FL, I'm also playing Earth & Beyond now. If you enjoy computer games, I don't think it matters what age you are.
