Yes, parents also play computer games, big deal. Broader appeal, bah. This thread needs to go away.

Wow, long thread.

Glad I found it. I've just been going through that whole personal delema of "geez, maybe I should grow up and start doing more adult things"

After reading all of your posts, you all have seriously made me feel a lot better...
Being only 28 myself, Freelancer was the first space type flight combat game I'd ever tried.... since Defender back on the Atari...first computer was a com vic 20....

Think I'm hooked now, would have liked for it to be a bit more .... in depth or complex then it was, I was actually looking forward to jumping on the bandwagon and actually going out and buying one of those flight joysticks...
but still a great game, visually stunning IMHO....

Great to know I'm not alone and by far not the oldest....

Seriously... thanks for making me feel better!

As a 35 year old, I am trying to rediscover the joy of Elite... maybe I never will, but FL is close.

Is it the freedom to do whatever you want that appeals? I hate linear plots & missions, I only just survived the in game story and would not want another linear mission but much more freedom to discover many more things.

What do you think?

50 Years old here

I broght FL because it was susposed to be Elite ish. It is not. It is a very good game if you have never played Elite FFE etc, There seems to be to much graphic stuff and not enough simple game play. I loved FFE it was simple, the graphics where good enough but what kept you playing to the wee small hours was game play not graphics.

I hate the jump gates in FL what happenened to Hyper drive, a lot of missions in FL are similiar ie, go here and get attacked by 4 - 6 ships, and no matter what ship or engine you have every one goes at the same speed. game paly was getting shot to hell by pirates etc and winning then limping in to some docking station to find your docking computer had been shot up and you had to dock manually

Never let the B******* grind you down

SharnMes:

Personally... I really enjoy a good plot or story to a game. Having said that I didn't really enjoy the SP story mode of Freelancer. The box cover blurbs made it sound much like a Morrowind type of game... having a main story but with many sub-quests and a lot of cause & effect. It was still a good game, but it's such a shame that being so close to having a GREAT game they seem to have fallen short.

For me it boils down to this: For everyone else that has done the story mode multiple times... It doesn't matter if you play as a pirate, good or neutral... nothing ever changes. After story mode, other then deciding what VHF you want to fly.... your actions continue to have no real effect...

How hard would it have been to add in some random encounters, or more perminent changes as a result of your actions? A bit of depth... or logic.
Flux in power between factions and/or houses as a result of your actions...
You land on Manhatten in a Sabre with nomad cannons, sunslayer torp and cannonball missiles.... ya think maybe someone would maybe ask if you wanted to take a job completly wiping out the rogue base?

ahh well... still was a good game... think I might go check out some combat flight sims next week.

I think that's the heart of things with FL - there is so much untapped potential, small things could have been done that would have made dramatic improvements to gameplay and some things that were done - like everyone going basically the same speed - just don't make sense.

I know I was hoping for a much greater sense of adventure from this game... its enjoyable but, like so many modern games, its only surface deep...

Freelancer is one of the best games ever made. I've played a lot of games.
It has tremendous appeal and attracts a broad spectrum of players. No need to mention all the great attrubutes of the game here, you know them.

I am 49 and I play constantly with my son who is 14 and we both love playing the game and tweaking it with mods from LR.

When something is really enjoyable, age isn't much of a factor.

I'm 39 to 40.
BTW, can someone point for me a place where I can find an Elite version that I can play on PC? FL is good enough but I would remember the greath feeling I felt for many minutes, hours, weeks when I was playn Elite.
It would be appreciated. Thanks.

An "OLD"? boy.
Keep wandering.

Well I'm 44, and I play Homeworld, Mechwarrior 4 series, and now Freelancer. I have a bro that is 64 and kicks butt on Mechwarrior 4 with the best of them. He also plays homeworld, and is looking to get FL too. I also have a 8 year old son and 6 year old daughter that plays on line games as well. Right now my son is out of state and hasn't seen FL. Man is he gonna love it he he.

There is a way that seams right to a man.... but in its end leads to distruction.....

Just started posting here, this looks like a decent place to make an intro

34 going on 35, got started on an off-brand Pong console around '78 or so. Then some text-based games on the TRS-80. Had a brief stint with the Coleco ADAM computer, it caught itself on fire (!), went to the C64. I never played Elite, I was more into the Temple of Apshai type games back then.

Got into the PC gaming world in '92 or so, got hooked on space sims thanks to Wing Commander. Became a major Privateer junkie, but was disappointed with Priv 2... I had been anticipating the arrival of Freelancer for a LONG time, but I allowed it to fade to the back of my mind, and didn't realize it was finally out until a little while ago. So I'm a little behind the curve...

But I think this game is pretty great - it's not perfect, I'd like to be able to take cargo missions a la Priv, fly some perishables through a Xeno blockade or something like that. On-call missions like the ones from Priv 2 would also be nice, one thing I *did* like in that game.

I'm taking my sweet time with the game, concentrating on exploration and faction dynamics, I'll get to the uber weaps and Edge World ships later. Right now my Hammerhead is serving me well.

Ever get the feeling... you're standing on plastic?
