Middle aged gamers flock to FL?

I'm 27... I've noticed quite a few of you are as well... that seems to be the average, BTW. I'm an Xbox Live player and I've noticed that WE are the demographic that developers really need to cater too. Besides... those little kids don't buy games. They can't afford them

Ok, 34 here. C64 "Elite" was the first for me.

Suppose us oldies remember what "Good" games are supposed to be like, these young'uns just cant make games like we had....(Bards Tale anyone)

Yeppers, 32 here and been playing since the C64 came out all those years ago, and been hanging on FL to come out, as I was an avid Elite player and still today I have an old copy I run via MAIM on my P4 to go back to the yesteryear of gaming.
Would like to see a few things updated though on Fl, some mission changes and more variety on Ships instead off all the same speeds etc. But hey FL still rocks and was worth the wait

Thank you ELITE started me on a great gaming life and still here today to enjoy FL.

Well, not a Univac, but does a Royal LPG-30 count? Pre-transistor, all tube, Flexwriter I/O, 38K rotating drum memory, ... and it heats the house quite nicely.

Hi

Although I'm 49 I only got my first PC 5 years ago. I did play pong but only a few arcade games in betwen such as space invaders. I love X-Beyond the Frontier and X-Tension which are probably the nearest to Elite so far and am looking forward to X2 out soon. I realise that FL is not going to be as good as the X games or Elite but when it comes out in the UK I'll be playing it for what it is - even if it doesn't live up to what was promised a couple of years ago. I've played the demo so do have some idea.

I'm a little late to the forum but a half century plus 4 years is calling my name this year. I guess that's middle aged as my grandmother is still knocking them dead at 94 and was dancing at my sons wedding last week. As to the first gaming experience try a monchrome green screen with text while trying to figure out to freeze the wizard or melt the ice with dragon fire. Throw the bird so the dragon chases him. Yep a z80 built it myself and all programs you had to write yourself with basic. Also had a SOFT Floppy style disk built in. I probably have 100 titles of old and new games. Some of my faves are Outcast like the story line, Unreal drop dead graphics a little tough at times (hate the jakari) Quake2, Blade of Darkness hard to learn the controls but some great game play graphics, Bang GunShip, Operation Flashpoint brings back memories of other times, Rune has some good and bad things about it just like FL, Rogue Sqadron tough at times, G police not great graphics but some interesting story plot lines, Omicron, I could go on and on but you get the idea. I agree once you are a gamer you are in for life. I think the challenge is that you are allowed to be or do things that you can't in ordinary life. There was a post here that talked about the "Dumbing" down of games I believe you are right in some respects. Like all things in life they must make it apeal to common denominator. Software companys spent a lot of money developing games and programs if they only sell a few then they loose money and have nothing to invest back on the next project. I always thought that is what upgrade and patches were for fine tuning the game to fit the smaller niche of people who want more from a particular game. Read through some of the posts and you will see a lot of complaints about how quickly they went through or how they were disappointed in one or another aspect of the game but how many people can say they didn't get their money's worth? Old guys are long winded so let me just say this on parting. Keep playing and buy what you like and like what you buy. Just some thoughts from the edge of space.

Oh my god it's the invasion of old people! Ahhhhhh~~~ (jumping out the window, screaming.)

(Scream fades, followed by a loud thud.)

Hey shouldn't this post be titled... Middle aged original computer gamers watch young n00bs also start to play Freelancer?

Hengist.

Developers are already targetting the older gamer demogaphic (gamers in their 20s and 30s). Rockstar made games like Grant Theft Auto 3 and Vice City with us in mind. Honestly, do the kids these days have any appreciation for good music like what we lstened to in the 80s? ;-)

37 here.

I was attracted to this game as it reminded me of my favourite Spectrum game Elite. I think it's funny that people complain about not having Joysticks for Freelancer, because in those days we used to steer via the keyboard

4 arrow keys let you do any manouevre you want (including barrel rolls for those moaning that you can't do them in Freelancer!)

And the first games I ever played (after Pong) were on my friend's Phillips G7000, a console game out around the time of Mattel's Intellivision. Anyone remember those old things!?

40 and going strong ;-)

From Elite to X-Fighter, WC ... Starlancer and beyond - so WTF are you telling us about FL ?

I´m not as much into the FPS thinggies - actually I did almost kill myself in a car accident when driving home one day like 10 years ago after a couple of hours after-work playing of DOOM/QUAKE whatever - so no more FPS for me since then - might be just me but that turning while your body sits still isn´t for me - no problem though with space sims - liked them best pretty much all the time - maybe only beaten once by the original first LLL (Larry) - I think pretty much half the industry did play that one .....

Just my 2 €cents

24 and plan on gaming for many yrs to come!

Post Wed Apr 09, 2003 3:19 pm

I'll chime in - I'm 33. Started gaming (if you could call it that) on a TRS-80 in the very early 80s. My first computer at home was a TI99/4A, which loaded games from a cassette player and used a television for its monitor. Then came the C64, with a single-sided single-density 5 1/4 inch external floppy drive. My first PC was a 286/12MHz machine, purchased in 1989 for more than I paid for my 2.54GHz P4 2 months ago

Must admit, I did play one of the Larry series, but only one and I didn't inhale....
