Saying that, it's still very good but if it had pinched a few more ideas from Elite (spy missions, blowing up planetary bases) and built upon them I may have taken a gaming holiday for a couple weeks just like I did for Elite!

Middle aged gamers flock to FL?
This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!
Just to throw my lot in with all the other thirty something plus.... The main reason I played Freelancer was to see if it could capture the mood of Frontier Elite; the most hours I spent playing any game. It came close in a few areas but didn't quite capture that desire to move on and on, the reward system isn't quite as good.

Hi, im a middle aged dude that loves anything that reminds me of Privateer. This is a very cool update to that. except for not having enough different types of missions like th escort jobs and making deliveries, or passenger type jobs. I've already finished all story line provided WITHOUT any enhancments. Now i'm truley a FreeLancer. I've got an Eagle class ship and am just wandering around make a pittiful sum of money, but enjoying space and all it's creative beauty. By th way....How do I make a screen-shot so i can use it for a screen-saver?
Oh and I'm a 47 year-old kid 8^)

...been watching this thread for a while, feel left out now..
Im 21, started on BBC B with Elite - no manual that was a bugger of a bugger for a 7/8yr old to work out Graduated to Frontier (£100 for 4 meg of ram) then First Enc (Braben what the hell were you on?). Since then dabbled a bit in WC and found Privateer 2 nearest to matching Frontier. Blah blah i've played more games/have more gaming credibily than you nah nah nah nah...
I've seen a few people (my ageish) saying they havnt played Elite or Frontier. There is a website where you can download them all - legit i think - plus manuals etc. First Enc's downside outweighed is upsides if u ask me. If you like FL i'm pretty sure you will love Frontier, i've never made it to the top of the military tree.
I think when people accuse FL of being too dumb or not detailed enough they are forgetting MSs ulterior motives with FL. It is clearly a console game (i'm not knocking them i love Monkey Ball) and thus will not compare favourably with Elite/WC or even Diablo.
So that leaves me waiting for Elite 4, which (by the fact the website hasnt been properly updated for years) i assumed was vapourware. What is the EVE-online thing? Anyone have any concrete news about Elite 4?

36 here and I cut my Gaming teeth in about 1971 or so (+/-2 years) on COMPUTER SPACE. Then SPACE RACE. I was hooked at a young age. Still hooked today after a long history that includes <GASP> A Mac.
My Mom bought one of the first ones in 84 and i had a blast with it with Strategic Conqest, Gato, Ultima and others. The list goes something like this:
Computer Space
Space Race
A whole pile of arcade games with kinetic plastic pieces that you either shot, drove around or flew through.
A pong type game
AT 2600
Intellivsion
The Mac
A significant portion of the 80's arcade games. Had I saved all that money and put it into bonds, I wouldn't have owed so much for student loans.
Elite et al on the Commodore 128
Until Finally FL on my newest PC
And everything in between.
The Waarthog
Pax Per Ultima Arma

Amazing this thread was started a month ago and people are still jumping in. I think it is great that we can all enjoy gameing no matter what our ages. I already have a post here but felt the need to say how neat it is to be associated with an industry that trancends Gender, Race, & Age. I like gaming for the release it gives.Personally, I still like the Outcast game just for the fact it was so different from most anything I had played up until then. Your reputation could also be affected by your actions in that game as well. I agree with a lot of the posts about if you got the gaming bug early, you are probably going to still play even if you are considered an "Old" guy. May the wind you feel in your face, allow you to soar above the mountians and view the world with a different perspective.

wow, look at the old people. I myself am 14 years old. My first gaming rig was a Nintendo Entertainment System!!!! got it for christmas when i was like 4 or 5. FIrst game ever played was duck hunt! That game was a balst, but that darn dog, i swear i wanted to kill him. I didn't get into computer gaming until 1997, when we got our first computer, doom was the game. Didn't get a "real" gaming computer until 2001, but I had also played consoles, Super nintendo, N64 and now a Gamecube, and no im not a nintendo fanboy.
Well i know that ill be gaming when im older just like you guys are

39 here, started gaming in 1980/81, Atari, Commodore, Sinclair Spectrum (terrible machine - Ad Astra space shooter was good though !) then PCs. People who started gaming way back when just keep on gaming, its got nothing to do with 'old timers' suddenly discovering gaming - we have ALWAYS been gaming. I have a copy of Starlancer and followed the Freelancer saga for a while, then figured it would never be released and lost touch. Turned to WWII combat simulators instead - love Il-2 Sturmovik and now Forgotten Battles. Imagine my surprise then when I saw the demo. of Freelancer on the cover CD of a PC mag last month - played it, loved it, just bought the full game and very pleased with it !
Hmm... I'm 19, but I do in fact remember the Atari and my old friend the Amiga 2000, -.- Got hooked on a really stupid game called "Mr and Mrs" which was about two little blue people collecting colored beads and walking around... Most of the people I play with in FL are around 19-45 all up, and all of them are good friends, it beats playing games against 12 year old kids that shoot on sight..
"Yeah hello[! I'd like to report this taxi driver.."
"And his name is?"
"Jam.. the symbol for Boron.. and a weird q surrounded by dots.."
"You sure it was Boron and not manganese?"
"Ofcourse I'm sure, I had the periodic chart with me at the time.." -.-

43 here. Been gaming for over 20 years now. Started with a TRS-80 Color Computer (CoCo) and been moving up ever since. Missile Commander was the first real computer game I played back then. Did a few of the old text based "adventures". I love empire building games, Patrician II, Railroad Tycoon series, Industry Giant just to name a few. Freelancer is good and has plenty of potential to become a really great game.

34 here. Started as a kid on pong, worked my way up through pretty much anything that could play games (P2000, Atari, Z51, Amiga) and I don't see any reason to stop now.
As long as my reflexes are fast enough, I'll be playing games till I die (and even if they're not, I might restrict myself to games like Myst LXIV )
