I have a question about the cmp exporter. I set milkshpae up and everything works ok but when i try to export a cmp. I get an error. The error is:

PROGRAM HAS PERFORMED AN ILLEGAL OPERATION AND WILL SHUT DOWN

MS3D caused an invalid page fault inmodual MSMODELLIB.DLL

Anyone know how i might go about fixing it?

I got the same error when I tried to export a model without materials textures and hardpoints. I realized you have to include everytihng in the model, since the plugin needs them all.

I had my mesh texured in 3ds max, does that mean I have to retexture it in milkshape.

It was textured already

Multi-Material in Max are not allowed in MilkShape, you have to transform your model in order to have only Standard/Simple materials... i think

Yeah, trying to export a model without materials is most likely what's making the plugin crash (the exception is, of course, the triangles that make hardpoint meshes, these don't need textures). If the problem presists however, e-mail me the ms3d file, and i'll try to take a quick look at it.

So i take it the best way is to just texture it in milkshape then.

Now I have to search around for a milkshape texture tutorial

More work

Here is how I prepare my mesh for MilkShape under GMax (free) :
If you have sub/multi materials you should know that each sub mat. correspond to a face id, the first sub mat. has id 1, the second has id 2, etc
Select all id 1 faces and detach them in a new object and them apply your first sub mat. to this new object. The new object has now a simple material.
Do this for all object and all multi mat.
At the end, each object should has its own simple material.
Now you can export

Great People! I need help!

I'm a newbie, lamer, whatever you wish to dube us. But I'm having trouble with my meshes in Milkshape after exporting them to CMPs. They look HUGE in Milkshape to make them BARELY appear in FL. I have even tried to scale the thing bigger till MS CRASHED while expanding it.

Can ANYONE tell me what the heck is going on???

I have a problem with the turrets , seems they get locked into gun ranges , they can't turn all the way
every time i change something in my design i have to use utf_edit and change the ranges of the turrets again else they only can shoot forwards
would be logical if the turrets would be set to 360 deg by default unlike the guns ??

Can you extract the .tga files from Freelancer? Then add them to your model and save as .cmp? There seems to be plenty there? Or is that too simple?

I have been making a model in milkshape but have no textures (or Paint shop). Why can't you use .bmp or jpg, or must they be .tga in order to be compatible?

they have to be .dds or uncompressed .tga else they don't show in the game
i use paint shop pro to convert any texture into 128x128 or 256x256 and save it as a uncompressed .tga file
u get a options tab where u can set the uncompressed option when u go to the save as option in paint shop pro, don't know about other programms
textures can be aligned in milkshape with the texture coordinate editor option under the windows tab
with the region option in the texture coordinator u can even use just a piece of the texture for specific parts of your ship

hope this helped

A couple of questions:

I can get either Adobe Photoshop 7 From a mate who bought it and doesn't use it as it does not suit his requirements, or I can buy Paint Shop pro thru my local computer dealer cheap... which is the best?

Can you extract the .tga files from Freelancer?

i found that PSP is much more accessible than Photoshop. But Photoshop on the other hand is the industry standard, and you'll probably find more tutorials for it...
