**FIX** for many problems playing FL!

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 4:12 pm

I fixed the same problem that Jabberwacky and a coupleof others were having by using regedit to force the machine to use the advanced instead of the nemo codec. I changed:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 "msacm.l3acm"="l3codecp.acm"
to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 "msacm.l3acm"="l3codeca.acm"

If you are using windows 9x, this change needs to be made in system.ini.
change msacm.l3acm=l3codecp.acm
to
msacm.l3acm=l3codeca.acm

This was after I installed the wma8-9redist so that the correct codec was in place. This told the machine to use it. Fixed the "Codec shows up but all the menu's don't do anything and it disappears right after viewing problem."

Good luck.

8. In ..<WinDir>\System32\ (or just the system folder, depends on your OS)
folder delete/rename the files "l3codeca.acm" and "l3codecp.acm"

well i found and removed the first one, bu ti can´t find the other one " l3codecp.acm " instead i have a file that is called " l3codecx.ax "

should i delete that one to, or leave it be?

hmm...me needs to restart his comp anyway now and try to install those links posted in the beginning.

I am stuck on mission 3, after meeting Juni, went to Walker, nothing happens...
On free choice i flew to that station-facility, destroyed all the foe´s there, nearly got me and Juni destroyed...
and then nothing...awaiting mission breifing...
I fly around trying to recon for more foe´s...but all i get is a voice saying "Warning! Leaving mission area"

theres a post in under Spoiler forum " Help on mission 3 " with no solution...
someone posted there to get here...

Hi!
On my computer Spaniard's way worked fine. There are no silent dialogues any more and if I want to encode MP3s I online have to rechange the registry entry. It's also not needed to install anything like the wma8/9_redist...

Thanks for your help!

People, i am completely stumped.
i tried every suggested solution, from the README and this thread, but nothing helps: i only get the ambient music. no menu sounds, speach or weapons.
it worked fine at first, but when i got to the third mission i lost the speech at california minor.

i run an Athlon XP 2100+ on a ASUSa7a 266 MOBO, with GeForce2GTS and Creative Audigy, under Win2k.

i updated the drivers, reinstalled DirectX and the fraunhoffer Codec, and enabled it.

i don't know what else to do.
help... :-(

* * * Even more problems now.

1. Went to list of audio codecs and manually deleted all of them except one (MS said I had to have that last one).

2. Dragged a MP3 into WindowsMediaPlayer so it would connect to the server and download the Fraunhofer codec. Restarted.

3. I checked the codec list, and Fraunhofer is NOT in the list, even though it says WM Player downloaded it and I can hear MP3's now.

4. I tried to play, and all I hear now is sound FX, NO music, voice, etc. just gunfire.

Any ideas of where to proceed ????

Thanx in advance,

Windows Media player uses a different driver than the game.
The game is use ACM (audio codec manager) which is an older standard.

You have to run WMFDist.exe from the Freelancer CD to manually install the correct audio driver.

I could not get cutscene audio at certain points and some of the dialogue in space. I have the Nimo codec pack installed.

I fixed it by extracting l3codeca.acm to the EXE directory from WMFDIST.EXE on the CD. I renamed it to l3codecp.acm (instead of making the change in the registry) and that solved my problems.

Hope that helps!

Here's the situation.

1. I did EXACTLY what Electric Brain said in his post entitled "Easier fix for sound problems!"

2. I get nothing except weapons sounds. No music, no speech. The Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec was installed, checked as "use this codec" and set to priority 1.

3. My system is:

Pentium 4 1.8 GHz

Windows XP Professional

256MB RAM

nVidia GeForce 3 Ti200 Pro (nfiniteFX Engine, AGP 4X/2X, 4ns DDR 64M

C-Media Sound Card

4. Previously I had installed the Nimo Codecs Pack Ver. 7.0 and DivX 5.0 ProBundle.

5. Believe me I read every posting in this Topic. I did find people who had the SAME problems with me. I did solutions that applied to my machine. Did I miss anything?

One more thing.

One thing I noticed.

When you go into Sunds and Audio Devices and click on the Fraunhofer IIS.. Codec...

And in the window where you set "use this codec"...

On the top part of the window it says: "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec Properties"

Now, Just under that it says: "Ogg Vorbis Audio Codec"

What's going on?

if you're using Win2k or WinXP the simplest thing to do is...

Run RegEdit
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
Look for msacm.l3acm or msacm.l3codec... delete them.
run WMFDist.exe from the Freelancer CD

the right codec will be installed and Freelancer willl play sound.

had to register to say thanks for the fix- works like a charm now if i apply the snd fix and turn display down to 800x600

Here's another solution.

Totally uninstall whatever windows media player you have. (i had 7.someodd).
Dowload the latest WMP file. (it was #4 of the MS site under downloads) and install. Try it out. It solved my problems, and I had been trying for a week without success.

hey all,
I tried many of the "solutions" that appear in this tread, and combinations of them too. Short of uninstalling then reinstalling windows xp I still have no voices. I'm wondering if the only option is to get a decent audio card, using onboard sound presently, but has never given me any sound problems ever.

Microsoft? Where's my patch?

I uninstalled the game and am waiting for a patch or comment on how to fix the problem from a microsoft rep.

I have spent twice as long trying to fix the no voice problem than playing the game.

thanks anyhow for those kind enough to help in the forum.

where did you find the fraunhofer codec. I have MSW/ME edition. I'm trying to get this dumb thing to work right....sometimes I get sound other times nada. I may try yours and Zerax's fix but clue me in on where to get the codec as well.

Thanks in advance.
