It backfired, now I have NO sound. I followed your instructions to the letter and nada. Could it be a winamp 3 conflict? I say that only cause I use it often...again here's the new list of codecs on my system.

Microsoft CCITT G.711 A-Law and u-Law CODEC
Microsoft G.723.1 CODEC
Windows Media Audio
Sipro Lab Telecom ACELP.net audio codec
Voxware Audio CODECs
Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC
Microsoft ADPCM CODEC
Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC
DSP Group TrueSpeech(TM) Software CODEC
Microsoft PCM Converter

Thanks so much for the help!

hmmm.. this shuld not be a winamp conflikt. (run winamp to )

now we want the mpeg layer-3 codec.
hate that microsoft did not include this on the cd as a standalone file. :/
You culd try reinstalling freelancer without uninstalling it. This may help
but i'm not sure. Else we hafto get you the mpeg layer-3 codec somehow.

Got the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 CODEC (decode only)

Back to square one, sometimes sound, sometimes silence. grrrr now you all understand why I hate MS?

hate them to. But it's a good game so it's worth the trouble.
Now if you goto multimedia tab in control pannel the goto properties for
Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 CODEC and change priority for it to top priority (highest number) and i shuld work just fine. And now check if it's working.

And it's not. hmph. This is so incredibly annoying.

i'm totaly out of ides for you how to fix this.. sorry mate.
Let's hope that you find a way to make it work.

I have tried all the proposed solutions thus far, and to no avail. I am really pissed. I'm in XP and it does not show any MP3 Codecs in the audio properties.

What is the registry fix? The forum on that site is down until friday.

Yeah I hope so too, thanks for the help though. It shouldn't be long until M$ decides they need a patch to fix all this stupid junk that went haywire.

Any help on how to get the Frau codec? I cannot for the life of me get it to appear....l3codeca.asm exists in system32 but it does not display on the audio properties...

I think we're in the same boat, Titan. I haven't figured it out yet.

Titan that codec labelled "MPEG Layer-3 Professional Audio Codec" looks like the (professional) version of the Fraunhofer codec. Or something similar that is preventing Freelancer from installing correctly.

Select that line and click the [Remove button.
Yon shouldn't need to Restart Windows
Then run the Windows Media redist (wmfdist.exe comes with game)
This will install the (advanced) version of the codec.
Then Freelancer should work fine.

Registry Solution

You can make a text file named "L3clean.reg" containing the following lines... then just double-click on that file to let Windows remove the registry keys for you.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
"msacm.l3codec"=-
"msacm.l3acm"=-

Note: add the right bracket to the end of that line since this forum strips it?

Or you can manually run RegEdit and remove the keys listed above.

Then run WMFDIST.exe which will now successfully install the Fraunhofer (advanced) codec.

Freelancer should now play sound correctly.

I want to thank everyone for posting their suggestions and comments on what has worked for them. I've maticulously <sp> tried each, with a fresh install today to no avail. Prior to taking any action while I had the Nimo Codecs I had sound that would occasionally skip out (no engine sound, some cutscenes, and most usually chat in space) Unfortunatly now my results have varied from no sound at all, to very low skipping sounds, on up to screeching sounds.

Quite disappointing to say the least, but I appreciate everyone taking the time to make suggestions and I'll likely keep an eye on this thread for anything new. Hopefully something will work eventually, I guess I could always try to reinstall Nimo.. maybe I will get some sounds back.

Installing the drivers being made over at: http://kxproject.spb.ru/ seemed to fix my crashing issues...
