National Anthems

Watching the olympics recently, one cannot help but watch the medal ceremonies for at least one event and listen to the anthems that are the pride of their people. I, unfortunately, caught one where America won and I had to listen to our own National Anthem, the star spangled banner, an out of date tune about war and bloodshed. I personally dislike our national anthem, and much prefer Canada's about peace, loyalty, and freedom and much wish that we imitated our northernly neighbors in this (and other) respects. But, the question I wish to ask with this post is what is your favorite national anthem and why? I'm partial to Canada, as mentioned above, but I simply adore Germany's anthem, showing pride in their herritage and hope in their future. --- VH16

Israel's "Hativka" is my favorite for personal reasons.

I agree, Germany's anthem is the best I've ever heard. Nice theme to it as well.

Friends are just people who have used each other so often it has become habitual.

actually i think a theme about war and bloodshed is quite appropriate for america.

A national anthem, is the home country's pride in song. We can be a little emotional about our own country [or not. The biggest thing that i noticed was the sound or the way they played them.

Did not sound good............................AZAR

Australia's anthem is great, especially with the satirical lyrics! The funniest thing is that most Australians know the first verse, but few know the second. As for the third, I can't actually remember whether or not there is one .

Good to see that other people actually like the German Anthem . It does wake inner feelings of the past (even if I'm waaay too young to even know how it was).

The Anthem is actually quite old and there was another verse to it which is now forbidden as it was from the old Nazi regime, stating that their territory went from somewhere to venus (not the planet, the river I think. It could of been the mars though...)

I am proud to be what I am.

I was proud to see our rowers singing the national anthem when they won gold. Its a rarity that you see anyone sing it nowadays because of the pro-monarchy lyrics...but its still our national anthem, we should sing it.

As for the german anthem. I actually like it - although of course it still has the old Nazi thing attached to it. Shame. Did you know that its actually used as the tune for several methodist hymns? Well now ya do One of the hymns I chose for my wedding could have been sung with that tune - but as 30% of the congregation will be non-english-speaking poles, I decided not to out of respect

@ff easy now where's that good christian spirit eh?!

let me put it this way, the star spangled banner is based off of an english drinking song from around that time.

A drinking song about war and bloodshed, even more appropriate for America! And I actually enjoy "god save the queen," brings back images of England's glory days, I can't see why anyone would object to that, unless you happen to be a member of one of the nations whos corpses made up the foundations of the "great" empires. --- VH16

@ff I'm aware of that, but you said...

actually i think a theme about war and bloodshed is quite appropriate for america

which is generalised and racist to at least 40% of the people on TLR:OT. Comments like that will only fuel a fire, and you can bet your @ss now that you've said it, this thread will spiral into a flame war. Do you really think that us british are any better? No way, in many ways we're even worse. So how would you like it if someone generalised the british as being a race of war and bloodshed? I know that I'd be pretty offended if someone spoke about me like that because of either a) our government or b) our history.

@indy - lol. actually thats scarily true

back on topic : I've always liked the national anthems of the eastern block states, they have a "we're cool, and we could kick your butt if we wanted to, but we simply can't be bothered" sort of feel about them hehe but for all I know they could be singing "donald duck looks great in a skirt, shame his haircut is out of date"

i liked the German national anthem until i'd heard it that many times at the end of GP races due to Michael Schumacher. "God save the queen" is a bit dated now the uk could do with a new one but i of course love Scotlands national anthem "Flower of Scotland" probably for the same reason as heltak does
