While I realize the core powers the droids, I still have to wonder why they would need to remove it from the rest of the ship. Could you elaborate on the power idea? The droids in episode 1 did not need a core on the ground. Even if they do need to be on the ground, the cores can still be destroyed as they attempt to leave atmosphere by cap ships in orbit. Pretty horrible design flaw...

If you remember, the crew on the ship activated the droids. There for, the lack of signal would shut them down. The circular part seemed to be the command part of the ship with the bulk in orbit.
