Forum Systems Chapter 6
And Now......
“Senator Corsair” the aide announced. Caesar was meeting him in an anti chamber rather than the main hall.
“My Emperor, you sent for me” Corsair spoke, with his head bowed . Caesar motioned for the others to move closer and instructed the aide to leave the room. A large table was positioned in the center of the room adorned with all manner of delicacies. There were goblets and pitchers of wine, fruit in abundance. Tawakalna knew how to win them over. He had a plan, but it required the help of these present and a few others, but craftiness, was a must. To remove a “Thorn” in his side, he must wield the knife with skill and cunning. But, he thought, I will remove that thorn.
Senator Esquilax had the information that he needed, and had finished meeting with key senators that would back the senatorial plan. The risk would be if the Emperor got wind be for it was implemented. Esquilax had the needed backing to protect the city. The power that some dreamed of.
The chamber of the meeting was emptying out now. Tawakalna still was not sure of the support to his plan. A couple of the senators had pledged their support, but others would not commit. As he left and headed to his study, a silent, dark shadow moved swiftly along the wall to the door. It watched as the Emperor turned a corner. Then moved to the door way leading to the street. It had a meeting to attend.
The next morning, with great pomp and ceremony, a procession entered the city. An unexpected one at that. There were several Generals, though no soldiers could enter. The all preceded down the way to the Forum. There was much murmuring among the people. They had never seen the military within the walls of Rome. Some speculated that change was in the wind. Such stirring not since Vespaisian took the throne from Vitellious. Many knew a change in the wind and hoped for relief from the cruelty of the Emperor, though none would say so openly. The same shadowy figure was watching from a nearby porch, it’s view unhindered. It had been an aide to all that was about to transpire.
The following day, as the Emperor walked out into his garden, he heard a noise growing. It took a few moments to realize it was coming from the forum. Trouble he thought. For the senate never met this early in the morning. He hurried to his chambers. “Bring me the royal robes and crown” he shouted to the servants. They scurried to prepare all and brought the things to Caesar. After dressing, he called for the guard and they joined him in the chambers. He spoke in angry tones, his face flushed. After explaining what he wanted, one of the guards left while the others surrounded the Emperor. As the Emperor left the palace, a servant met him, short of breath. It was the chamberlain. “My Caesar, I have to report”. He stopped.
“What is it” Tawakalna said through grit teeth.
“My lord, Senator Corsair, is dead” he answered and bowed his head. The chamberlain heard no response, only felt the sword going through his heart and the sight of his own blood on the ground.
Nearly all the Senate was present in the forum. And unknown to them, in the corridors, were many praetorian. All armed and ready, all loyal. Senator Esquilax moved to the podium and all became quiet. “My fellow senators, today, we change Rome back to the republic it once was.” he spoke with full confidence. A murmur threatened to grow to a roar. A figure in a hooded robe moved to stand near the senator. It’s head remained bowed. A hush returned. “It is time to end the tyranny of Caesar, today, we have the support of the three largest armies including the ten legion. And withing these walls, the full loyalty of the praetorian” Esquilax spoke, looking at the other senators as he spoke.
The Emperor chose this moment to enter the forum. “Treason, senator, Treason!” an outraged Tawakalna screamed. But he was without his guard.
“My Emperor, your position is no more” Esquilax spoke, looking Caesar in the eye. Rage expanded, Tawakalna drew his sword, but at the same moment, five swords were instantly at his throat. “No, Caesar, it is over, take him away” The Senator spoke.
The crowds were celebrating in the streets. Joy at the freedom they now had spread. The senator was in his privet chambers, alone with the hooded figure. “My friend, this peace could not have happened with out your help.” he stated. The figure nodded and reached for the hood and lowered it. “It was my pleasure senator, and thank you for protecting my family.” the figure spoke. The girl from the porch, sycho_warrior, see then turned and went home.........
