** Tutorial ** - Drizzt4.0''s FL Ship Creating Tutorial

Here you can discuss building custom ships, texturing and 3D modeling in Freelancer

Post Sat Mar 13, 2004 7:18 am

ok,
i've being working on a custom ship. i got the model in Milkshape, used that funky .MAT exporter, edited the ini files and eveything is done, when , what do you know? its invisible. so, looking through this thread, i saw a few different reasons why ships become invisible. i tried changing the Scale, i changed the LOD ranges, the camera angles, what weapons are equiped, i even thried chaging i from a FIGHTER to a CAPTIAL and so forth. but nothing seems to work. i did on the other hand manage to make it owkr with FLMM and got it into a FLMM zip file, and i was wondering if there was anyone out there who would be willing to let me email it to them and have them take a look at the files?

ok, did you try flipping your textures? the textures you used in milkshape to texture the model need to be flipped vertically and saved in your .mat file, otherwise they will not show up.

How do you make groups in milkshape? Dublacating them dosen't allow a texture to be placed on it?

When I download a tutorial I open the zip file and theres nothing in it. Soulition?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? my /? key is stuffed..............

I just wanted to ask something that's been on my mind lately. I noticed people refering to .sur files but I've no idea what they're for. I haven't needed them so far but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Whenever I try to select the "triangles" I want the same ones get selected on the other side of the ship. Also, Why cant I select a polygon to convert to a hard point when I'm in "3D" view?

I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members.

Try the Tools->Model Cleaner menu option before exporting the cmp file.
Should remove any triangles & vertices causing a problem like a divide by zero exception.

You might wanna try to turn on "ignore backfacing" or something like that

Then zoom closer to the face you want to select. If it selects more than one faces click somewhere else than try again (I had the same problem...Sometimes I had to click 20 times to select the face I wanted)

Hello, and thanks to Mr. Do'Urden (drizzt) for his tutorial =)

I've a question about hardpoints, that's the step I'm on right now. He mentions setting the engine fire away from the nozzles, like it should be, but *how* do you set the HP away from the ship, if you are clicking on triangles on the ship to set the HP?

Also, how do you get a HP centered? There is always a dividing line in the texture I want to place a HP, like directly in the center of the ship. Even if you divide it into many parts, it still won't be centered. My first time at 3D modeling, so I'm still a bit confused.

@ ColinS,
Thanks for your suggestion. I'm afraid it didn't work. It did suggest a couple of things to clean up but I still couldn't export. Anyone else have any ideas?
I know its not the exporter plugin because I've exported other models with no problem. Something is definitely jacked with the model but I have no clue what it could be.

drizz, in your next tutorial version, might i suggest an explanation of what a sur file does aside from allowing destructible ship parts?

it also makes sure that a beam weapon can actually hit the ship you create. if you don't have a sur file of about the right size, beam weapons will literally pass straight through your ship. missiles will still hit, because they don't just do point damage, they have an area of effect. you can still ram into things.

the best bet with a sur file right now is to find an already existing freelancer ship that has very nearly the same shape that your ship uses, make a copy of the file, then rename it to "yourship.sur" and place it in the same directory as you place your cmp.

thanks chips for the good explanation to me....

hi all, i'm having difficulty downloading the tutorial. is it me or does the download not work at the moment?

ps: will i need any previous programming knowledge to do a mod- all ive ever programmed is a wee buggy on Pbasic in school!
pps: if anyone has any knowledge of Solid Works (a 3D CAD programme) , can they tell me if i can make my model on that, as i am used to using it?
thanks.

anyone having problems downloading the tutorial from TLR can download it here

I am sorry for the long delay before i made any responses... im still without a hi speed connection... however in a week or so i should have access to a 2meg cable connection and i will begin the overhaul of the tutorial then.

OH and ANYONE interested in giving me a hand with this overhaul can contact me by email.

I'm looking for editors, writers, proofreaders, and graphics people. ONLY SERIOUS people with a working modding knowledge may apply.
