** Tutorial ** - Drizzt4.0''s FL Ship Creating Tutorial

Here you can discuss building custom ships, texturing and 3D modeling in Freelancer

Post Sun Mar 21, 2004 7:02 pm

Thanks for your great guide. I've read through it and the icon creating one and I can't figure out how to make the civilian skin mods work for just one faction. I now realise that I have to change their mat ids using the crc editor so that FL knows its not for all civ ships. I don't know what the different tga files within the mat file refer to what ship, if you know what I mean? Is there a tutorial anywhere for making mat files for FL ships which are faction specific? ie IMG civ ships a different colour from GMG civ ships. I understand the shiparch entries for mat files and I understand that I'll have to have separate folders for IMG and GMG civ ships.

Thanks for a great forum.

I am not understanding the whole Hardpoint thing. Do I have to make a new face or what?

Post Thu Mar 25, 2004 4:45 am

no not really... what you are doing is selecting the face/ or faces where you want the hardpoint to be and clicking duplicate selection from the edit menu OR regroup from the group menu... copying the hard point face allows you to move it around while regrouping that hardpoint face will completely detach the face from the mesh(so if you want to be able to move the hardpoint- duplicate dont regroup.) Or yes you could create a new face. but i really dont think thats necessary.

good luck,

I know people have done it, so does anyone here know how to make a playership dockable? As in, I could be flying a battleship, and my clanmate could dock with it. I have an alternative planned, but it requires new SUR files. So does anyone know how to do this?

Post Thu Mar 25, 2004 5:54 pm

Drizzt, I didn't fully understand that. Do you have any chat mediumsthat you could hit me up on?

I just realised that Truespace is excellent for FL modeling...

Any model you make you can save as 3DMax ascii which Milkshape opens imidiately....no exporter needed....
And given the fact that Truespace is friggin easy...hehehe...

Just one question:
When making LOD's do all of them need to have all hardpoints?

Allso, if 2 LODs have the same texture, does the MAT file have to be updated?

Sad Sad news...

The continuation of this tutorial must come to an end. I am no longer able to remake and keep up on this tutorial due to... certain aspects of my life. If someone was to want to continue and take over my tutorial I would appreciate it. You dont have to ask, just make sure you do a good job and give me credit for the original... it breaks my heart to leave it the way it is, but im glad it has helped at all... i never thought it would become what it has and thanks so much.
Here is the ORIGINAL WORD DOC for the tutorial.

i may be able to answer some questions everyonce in a while, but i must leave it at that.

Once again thanks everyone,
goodbye for now
