** Tutorial ** - Drizzt4.0''s FL Ship Creating Tutorial

Here you can discuss building custom ships, texturing and 3D modeling in Freelancer

Post Tue Mar 30, 2004 12:49 pm

We've received word that Drizzt4.0 has been in some sort of accident and as was stated in the prvious post will no longer be able to continue with this great tutorial. We don't have details at this time, but it appears a reliable source has made contact with TLR concerning this issue.

We'd like to thank his wife for letting us know. Here's the original message in it's entirety:

Jerry, Drizzt4.0, has asked me to let you guys know about his situation. I'm his wife.

He is no longer going to be able to work on his tutorial. He has been in an accident and will be unable to continue to work on it. The doctors think he might be back in action in maybe two years, but until we know for sure we would like for you to wish us well.

thanks,
drizzt's wife

God speed in your recovery Jerry. People come and go here all the time but we're a family here and your regular presence will be missed. The tutorial legacy you created will be here when you return. For now, take care of the more important things in your life, we've got your six here.

I echo the words of Stinger totally. Jerry, I hope that you have a quick, and full recovery, as nothing is as important as the human body. This is the best tutorial that has been written by anyone concerning the modding of Freelancer, and it has spawned ALOT of ship builders

Basically - Jerry, you do us proud, so god speed - and hope your better soon!! We'll keep the homefires burnging for you .

Yeah, Drizzt we hope you can make as speedy of a recovery as possible.

Props to you for your dedication and work to bring us THE FINEST tutorial for Freelancer modding ever. I will pray for your recovery, my friend.

I shall also be praying for you. I hope you recover soon, and I hope that you and your family pull through ok. Guys, let's not post any ship modding stuff in this thread. It just doesn't seem right. We all pray for you.

You and your family will be in my prayers too.

drizzt4.0,

I read about your accident and I too wish you a full and speedy recovery, I do hope you are up and about before you know it..

I sent an email to drizzt4.0 suggesting that we could add an extra chapter on weapons creation.. he replied that we may be able to do something.. and now this.

Well, it looks like I just volunteered to carry on the tutorial.. I do hope I can do the job justice.. I am happy to try...

Like Stinger said, we at TLR got the message from his wife, but unfortunately we don't have further details about his condition. Of course we'll keep you all posted if we hear anything more.

Harrier, i'm glad you just volunteered to continue with the tutorial. That's what Drizzt4.0 wants and I can't think of a more suitable person to do so than you. There is no doubt in my mind you will do the original tutorial from Drizzt justice.

Thanks for wanting to do this

@Drizzt4.0: If you read this, I wish you all the best with your recovery and please stop by when you have the change. God speed!

Hello, all,
I have reached the last part of making my ship - the infocard. I have the FLed-ids program, have followed the tutorial exactly, and whenever I press the Save ids_name or ids_info button, I get this error message:
"Error: BeginUpdateResource failed: 19"

What does this mean?? It will not allow me to save my infocards, and I have followed the tut to the letter.
When it gave me this, I tried a different number, 11111, clicked "Get ids_info" and it brought up an empty screen. Thinking this was what I needed, I copied/pasted my altered xml text for my ship (copied Patriot's, changed text for my ship) then pressed the "Save ids_info." It saved - at least down at hte bottom, the little status box said: "Saving infocard.......Done" I did the same with the name (plugged the # i used, clicked "Convert", got 207719, plugged into Get ids_name. I again got an empty box, typed my ship's name, Save.)
However, whenever I try to pull up those infocards, like the description and name, i get a blank screen again, like I didn't even save the friggin files. BUT I DID about 10 seconds before, and they do not show up.

Can anyone please help me out? What is that Error:... I mentioned, and how do I fix that? thank you for any help

Hey Everybody, I'm new here.

Anyways I followed the Drizzt's Tutorial but now that I run it it just crashes when the Freelancer splash page (when it is loading) comes up. Can anybody help me?

Ro9ue,

A couple of things occur to me...

Is the .dll write protected (i.e. read only)? Fled-ids will not save in this instance and will normally return an error message similar to the one you describe...

Do you have your path statement correct....to edit a .dll in Freelancer..it should be: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer (assuming that your Freelancer directory is on "C" drive - Substitute the correct drive letter if not on "C"drive)

Did you use the ids numbers drizzt provided in the tutorial? I checked and they are available...

If all else fails then I suggest you use a custom .dll, this is easy to set up .. and there is an empty .dll in the downloads section... and you can simply declare it in your Freelancer ini file.. if you want to know how to do this please post again.., and I will do an explanation on the use of custom .dlls... If you cant find it let me know and I will see if I can find it and post a link

Whrly,

I assume You have created your model and followed the tutorial to get it into the game.. and it crashes to desktop when you try to start freelancer with the model files in game? If so then one of your .ini files sounds like it might be wrong... the smallest error can have frustrating consequences.. check the wording in your files.. if you cannot find an error, email me the files (provided they are under 5 meg) and I will take a look. Please dont just email me the files.. try to find the error first...

Thanks. I did find the error but now Freelancer is dependent on my mod. I use FLMM and when my mod is on, it works fine (but I can't play most multiplayer games) but when it is off, it crashes. Sigh

My dear Drizzt, many thanks for a outstanding tutorial, it's just one little thingy, I can't buy mi ship mate! I can see it in the menu of all ships in base, but when I go to transfer *CRASH*.
SO a few details, 1. is it some ID I need to fix or what?
2. Are the Internals to be placed outside the ship or inside the ship? (Says outside in the tut but i sounds weird...).
3. How do I make my textures so they won't look like graffiti when I paint em in Milkshape? EX. I make a texture with pipes (.TGA) and it's 256x256 but in the material library it seems a bit...repainted, and it looks even worse on the ship.
The pipes are no longer pipes but 2 large areas which seems to be coming from a mirror reflection in the middle or something. Makes the ship kinda ugly...

Ricky26k,

Sounds to me that you may have a problem in one of your .ini files , could be a typo or something not referenced properly i.e. path statement.. I would check these first.

1. Ship id numbers, (as far as I know) should not really cause the problem... If in doubt I set them to 000000 for testing purposes, Freelancer sees this as "object unknown" ... One thing I find works is to pick a model approximately the size and style of your ship.. buy it in game.. then replace the cmp and mat files .. if your ship appears ok then the files are alright....
2. Not sure what you mean here could you elaborate.. Please ;P
3. Textures if .tga, should be saved in 24 bit format... if the texture looks strange try making it larger just to see if the problem is still there... did you extract native freelancer textures or make your own? Are you using one 256 x 256 texture for the whole ship?

If you want to .zip the files and email them to me and I will take a look.... but please dont just send files with no message or the spam filter will remove it..

Harrier.
