Nope, can't see where shots are coming from. I think using the 3rd person mode gives more awareness of the surroundings. I think the viewing angle is actually wider too in regular mode.

So no.

It's occasionally useful if you have a speed mod on, and you have to judge things very carefully to avoid hitting an object. But in combat, it's useless, because if someone's coming at you from the front, the splash effects against your shields make it almost impossible to hit them back accurately

Always, never liked 3rd person view in any game.

I have done. Once in combat to find out whether it was of any use. It wasn't, so never again. Once in a while though, especially when cruising through a pretty nebula, I switch to cockput view. I still don't use it for dodging asteroids and rocks and debris and stuff though, you can see what's going to hit you better in 3rd person, and you get a wider view of the battlefield in general so there's little use for cockpit view besides authenticity and aesthetics, IMO.

I tired it for a while, it does give you a better sence of immersion but you loose a lot of sound effects (cruise engine winding up) and the combat is more difficult.

Always. Only use third person for Hovis race.

It's weird, the best view I thought in Starlancer was cockpit view and I didn't like 3rd person, but then it's the other way around in Freelancer.

Depends on the ship. In some ships, the cockpit view is great. In most, however, it looks like you are in a wobbly bird cage.

I only use cockpit view for the Hovis race, especially in a Crusader. Otherwise, when I fire guns the flashes make it hard to see anything else.

I've never used cockpit view, probably 'cause I don't know the key command. besides that, the cockpit view is probably not good because it takes out the sense of a lack of reality. With too much reality you might go crazy and try to blow up some guy in a truck on the highway because you think it's carrying diamonds or h-fuel.

This is an interesting inquire & can bring up some contention.

However, for myself I have used both views extensively and finally settled on cockpit. The main reason for this is that it is IMMHWO more realistic, immersive and helps to recall the good days of WC I & II and Privateer 1. Also, it WAS the ONLY way I was able to beat that )@$&@NMEF dispicable Hovis mission.

About the only tiime I use no cockpit is should I be using a Mining MOD. To not have a cockpit permits faster mining since FoV is greater. But that would be about it.

Well, that is the view from this Frog Pond.
