One reason im so stubborn with sticking to First person, is cause I used to play the old X-Wing, and Tie fighter games.. And in those it was all first person.. So thats just what im most comfortable with..In third person, its hard for me to keep up with everything, without getting confused..

The 1st person View would be VERY good if the interface shows up a radar or something similar... but only in 1st person, in 3rd person YOU are the radar

Only reason I don't use cockpit view all the time is because in some ships it is TERRIBLE! You look like you are in a bird cage (e.g. Titan) or the cockpit wobbles and is d**n irritating. What's wrong with Digital Anvil over that?

A few ships are wonderful in the cockpit view -- e.g. the Starflier at the beginning of the game or the Eagle after SP play.

Is it possible, for someone to build a radar into the game? Or would that require the source code?

It's not supposed to be the cockpit that shakes, it's supposed to be simulating your head shaking due to the inertia. This feature is quite common in most modern flight sims these days.

If you look at some of the early FL beta screen shots here at TLR, they show a radar display in the cockpit. The code is in there somewhere, more likely disabled rather than removed I would imagine.
Anybody got a lot of time and a hex editor to create a 'real' mod?

It depends on what I'm flying. If I'm in a LF, it's usually 1st person, anything else it's 3rd person most of the time.

The cockpit mode is so much more immersive. At first I too was distracted by the flash from my guns. But later I realized the cockpit mode gives you the feel of actually BEING in the thick of battle. It gives a sense of reality to the game; it helps suspend disbelief that its just a game. Immersion is often the difference between a good game and a great game. The whole point of playing video games is to step out of reality for while and immerse one's self in a fantastic world of excitement and adventure, blah, blah, blah. I find the third person view takes away that sense of immersion and makes FL less fun. When I'm in the cockpit and feel like I'm really in combat, I forget that FL is largely just a point-click-and-shoot game.

For example, why was Half-Life such a good game? It's an FPS just like the 30,000 others that have come along. What made it different? It was the sense of reality to the game. You honestly felt that you WERE Gordon Freeman. From the graphics to audio and cut-scenes, you felt that it was YOUR life in jeopardy, not just some pixelated digital construct's. And the part of Half-life that people liked the least was when Gordon went to an un-earthly place that was too incredible to believe was real. (Trying not to give out spoilers, but if you haven't played Half-life by now do it now for your own good. It's the gamer's equivalent of reading great classical literature.) In short, players liked the reality of the game so much, they forgot that Half-life was just another FPS whose game mechanics weren't too much different or better than other games.

Whew!

Third-person view doesn't feel real. I like the cockpit mode better.

I use the third person view, but try playing the single player through in first person, I shall warn you now - its not easy!

That's strange because I find it easier playing both single and multiplayer in first person view.

In Rebalance mod I have a battleship so...

I use turret view for fighting and when I'm cruising long distances, as it is easy to see all around. I use 3rd person mode for combat movement and normal movement, like thrusting short distances. And lastly I use first person for docking with tradelanes and bases.

I use 3rd person view almost all the time. in combat it provides you with larger firing arcs then 1st person does and it is possible to see where enemy fire is coming from. It also makes dodging things easier. I never had a problem with doing the race(except for bumping into him) in 3rd person view.

the only time I go 1st person is when I am taking a screenshot and don't want my ship in the way or when I am "relieving" a transport of some excess cargo.

K, I'm writting this much later then the rest of y'all were in here...but personally...I think it really depends on the class of ship. If it's something small like a fighter, which usually don't have turrets as it is, then first person is better. If you're in a freighter(or if using mods with even larger ships), than third person allows you to use turret few and hit things more rapidly. The only time I use third is to look around, or when I'm in a fight and I'm in a freighter or larger class ship.

Jack: "Magnets. Magnets, every, every one of those pieces has got a little tiny magnet in the bottom, to hold it on the board when you're driving so it doesn't rattle off. Anyway, every one of those magnets has got a little electrical field around it, that's how she was able to manipulate it. Magnets." Hammond stares blankly. "They do look like horses."
