Game crashes on joining an MP server

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Not the case, I have the 40.72 drivers.

Post Fri Mar 21, 2003 1:23 pm

I have win98se
nvidia ti4200
directx 9.0 (maybe 8 is better?)
onboard sound
amd 1700 (intel incompatable?)
ddr 128
I am on a lan at home. (port issue?)

I tried the driver updating fix.
My mb is not intel so im thinking miniport drivers?
The other thing is... are you all using directx 9 or 8? Maybe it is 9.0?

I ctd once i click on multiplayer or lan as well.

It appears to be solely an sp1/ sp3 problem which sucks for those of us who have integrated sp1 or 2000 with integrated sp3. We have to wait for a patch.

Amd 2000 XP

Radeon 8500 128 meg
Via KT400 chipset

It's not a SP problem, it's not a Nvidia driver problem, it is most likely a Direct X problem (something to do with directplay?) or perhaps a codec problem...
I'm running a Freelancer image off my hard drive with a no-cd patch, clannies with the exact same no-cd patch are not having any problems.
Before I re-installed FL & DX9 it would 'connect to global server' and do that forever without luck (but NEVER did it send any packets outbound, since my firewall never asked me to 'ok' it)
Now my pc freezes up when I try to get a list of servers

PC Specs:

PIII 533B
Windows XP Pro Corporate 5.1.2600 (latest patches but no SP1 installed)
Nvidia TNT2 M64 - Detonators 43.00
Creative SB Live! value
384MB SDRAM (pc-133)

Here's some food for thought. This problem came to me when I installed Visual Studio .NET on my XP system, which came bundled _with_ SP1. I can uninstalled VS .NET, but I still get the same problem. So, it must be some kind of update. So far we can trim it down to this. My specs:

XP 1800+
Shuttle Ak31A
Chaintech GF4 4600
SB Live!
3com Nic
24x Lite On
3 Hd's
XP bundled with SP1
Latest Nvidia drivers

[edit --- I appear to have fixed this issue on my system --- look for my other thread in this forum /edit

Same issue, I click on Multiplayer, and choose my connection type, I get the server screen up and it just falls to the desktop silently. I've uninstalled and reinstalled both Freelancer and DirectX 9.0 without luck.

Shuttle AK35GT2 / TBird 1.4ghz
GeForce 4 Ti4600 / Det40.91

WinXP / SP1
C-Media Onboard sound
Linksys LNE100TX
Other misc hardware

The only thing I can think of is it's a DirectX 9.0 related problem, since DirectX 9.0 was actually released as Beta (seriously -- Microsoft still recommends using DirectX 8.1a over 9.0 for everything). Also, if I go to dxdiag and try a DirectPlay test, it errors out with a Send Report and locks up dxdiag after that.

Is it possible to uninstall DirectX 9.0? I am having similar problems but with the single player game. I have tried all (well I think all!) the solutions posted and on the Microsoft Support site, with no luck. I have come to the conclusion that it is probably a DirectX problem.

Any thoughts?

The only way you're going to get DX9 uninstalled is if:

A) You have a system restore point from before you installed DX9

or

You reinstall Windows and NOT install DX9

I do firmly believe the crash issue before getting the server list is related to DX9 in some way, but as I posted in my other thread, I updated my router's firmware and all is fine now, everything works. I don't know...

I don't believe that it is, because the problem occured for me after I installed Visual Studio .net . That came out far before DX 9, and I already had DX9 installed, playing Freelancer easily.

Well there is a way to uninstall DX, using DXBuster (just search google).

But it's NOT a Win 2K/XP only problem, I'm running WinXP on primary partition, and Win98SE on 2nd, and a whole system only running Win98SE, and none of them can connect (and in LAN, we can connect, and play, but if we connect again, and try to use the same Chars. is crashes).

Buuuuuuuuuup. . .

Install Windows Media Player 9.0

Care to elaborate on that "SorceCode"?

Windows XP
Geforce3
Not sure how to check on Nvidia drivers but I don't have the latest ones as they screw up my gamma.
Hercules Newest Sound Card whatever it is

I finally actually connected to a server after installing the newest Direct X. However whenever I launch my ship it crashes to desktop so fast its amazing. Doesn't even send an error report.

If it were Direct X 9.0, I think it would've happened to me sooner. It didn't start when I installed DX9.0. It only started after I had my internet access number changed. The only things I've installed since this started were X-Plane and Need for Speed: High Stakes. I've uninstalled X-Plane, but NFS:HS is still on my HD. I have a PIII 667 Mhz with 128 MB of RAM and an nVidia TNT2 32 MB video card. The only things that have changed on my comp was the access number and the two games. That's it. Before, I had NO crashes in MP. I just couldn't play it due to Uber Lag. If it's not one thing, it's another. Something always has to go wrong. I hope the upcoming server patch fixes this crash thing. No matter what I do, I can't play MP. It's just not meant to be, I guess. I'm on 56k, btw.

Thank you,
