Game crashes on joining an MP server

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Post Tue Mar 18, 2003 12:43 am

I am having the exact same problem described at the start of this thread. Originally my connect button was behaving as if dead, but after reinstall of the game I now have this problem. Im dying to get some multi and we shouldnt have to reinstall windows to do it. There are some serious issues with this game that must be looked at...seems to me not enough testing was done with this game before release. The game itself rocks but this is just another example of how ****ty Microsoft really is.

Athlon 1GHz T-bird
512MB SDRAM
Asus A7V-E
On-board Via audio
GF4 Ti4200
40GB Maxtor

Windows XP Pro SP1

Although I am in no way having this problem, i believe this has something to do with XP. Because im running on Windows 98 SE with a soundblaster card and it works fine. So if all else fails, you can try doing MP in 98.

I have no problem and I'm running 2k SP3.

I'm having this problem now and I wasn't last night. The only difference is that last night, people on the global server could see my server but not ping it - tonight they can get in (had old firmware that I updated) but I cannot leave my starting station - crash to desktop.

I reinstalled my server, reset the router to factory and I can connect again to my own - tho I doubt anyone else can =(

I am not sure about Win2k because the way I fixed it (via reinstall with no updates) was only tested on WinXP. This is NOT a SP problem, as far as I can tell it is one of the Windows XP/2k Critical Updates and or one of the security updates. Now bare in mind that this may not affect everyone, but I think for al of us on this board it is. At this time I dont know of any other way to fix, other than a full reinstall and not updating any of the windows updates. This should work for atleast all XP users. If you dont want to reinstall then you will need to wait for a new windows update or freelancer update....

Hope this helps

Your ignorance succeeds you, "Kusari_Ranger." Microsoft did not develop Freelancer.

No **** they didnt, DA did. Whats your point? as publishers they still have a certain responsibility to insure their investment succeeds to its maximum ability. Not to mention they DO make Windows operating systems...which is where the root of this problem lies.

After reading my post again I can see how it was badly phrased...

Ok, I don't even get to join a server because I'm not even connecting to the global server, any way to fix that or am I just asking something old that I missed?

Ok...I also did the reinstall WinXP bit. If you install Freelancer BEFORE you install SP1, you can play on the servers. If you install SP1 before Freelancer, you can't. Why this makes a difference I have no idea...I'm suspecting it's part of the "Set Program Access and Defaults" code introduced in WinXP SP1 and Win2K SP3.

Ok, so if I do the whole reinstall win XP, what's SP1 just so I don't install it again?

Most of the people listed have an Nvidia video card. A couple of my friends trying to connect to my server kept getting kicked. After they both upgraded to driver 41.09 released in December they stopped having the problem. I'd get the one directly from www.nvidia.com.

I don't know about the people with the ATI cards.
