Game crashes on joining an MP server

I'm running freelancer on the following system:

Duron 650 @ 800
GForce 2 MX
Vibra128
384MB PC133 RAM
Windows XP (corp/pro) SP1

Whenever I attempt to connect to a multiplayer server (even one running locally) The game crashes to the desktop (And generates one of those annoying crash reports that no-one sends to microsoft) - This happens on servers with/without passwords (I get the oppertunity to enter the password, but it crashes immediately afterwards). I have run dxdiag's DirectPlay test (worked fine) and tried re-installing the game but have had no luck - I also can't locate any game generated error logs (they usually help isolate the cause of the problem)...

Has anyone else experienced/fixed a similar problem? or if anyone has any ideas don't be shy posting them

Thanks

I have that problem as well.
The error seems to occur in the remoteserver.dll

AthlonXP 2200+
GeForce4 Ti4400
SB Live! Value
512MB PC2100 RAM
Windows XP Pro

I also noticed it was in remoteserver.dll - I'm guessing that's the DLL with the connection/network code - perhaps there is a conflic with the network drivers or stack we're using...

Have any of you ever installed Tiny Personal Firewall by anychance? I had that running - maybe it leaves some conflicting hooks in the network stack or something...

But I'm still stumped - I'm thinking that re-installing XP will fix the issue - but I'm reluctant to do it for a game which since I've finished the single player story really holds no real long term appeal - ahhh Elite - now there was long-term appeal

I've never installed Tiny on this isntallation of XP.

Bugger - there goes that theory

Oh well...

Dont think its Tiny PF2

I have installed it (game and server) on 2 machines on my LAN, both have Tiny PF2 installed. Single player, MP LAN and Internet all work fine.

My friend has problems on MP servers over internet, the game hangs at System gates, when it loads the next section.

The only thing I can think is poor connection to server, as he is the only user I have had on my server with dial-up, all other users have been on ADSL or cable and had no problems what so ever.

The game crashes when you try and _join_ the server and it's not a poor connection because it happens even when running a server on a LAN (or the same machine even).

My guess is it's something to do with the connection establishment code - perhaps a weird NIC driver or something - but I can't really be bothered investigating it further because I can't see how the game would be fun multiplayer past 10-15 minutes - I mean there is only so much explore/trade you can do before you get bored.

*sigh* I miss dynamic content.

**NOTICE** All of you with this problem are running a SoundBlaster card...looks like another SB card issue... *sigh*

I think there is an error log file.

\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Freelancer\FLspew.txt

note: some of those folders are hidden, so you may have to disable the Windows folder option that hides them from you.

And you should send those crash reports to MS, they have some tool that helps track down and debug common problems... sometimes it even gives you a link to an existing fix.

It also contains some information I'd rather they didn't have

and I've looked in that folder before and it was empty - but I'll check again once I get home...

I have the same problem on 3 computers, all with win xp and with a geforce card. But as I see it the problem is when the compter tries to connect to the global server since if I pull the internet cable out so my computers are in a LAN ONLY then it works fine(but ofcause I cannot find internet severs:-)). As soon as you find a resolution to this problem PLEASE type it here!
