Game crashes on joining an MP server
The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...
Okey this might be just a wiled guess or somthing, *I am also having this problem*
Everyone has WinXP SP1 or Win2k SP3, both are under the same NT backbone so I will guess that some things the SP will fix will be the same stuff for both 2k and xp. So could it possibly be the SP????? maybe its blocking or changed somthing the game needs. This is just an idea.

Well, I'm pretty sure it's not the SB, since I completely disabled mine in bios and it still didn't work. It would seem to be something with 2k/XP, but it's obviously not happening to everyone running 2k/XP or this thread would be 30 pages long now. Here's what I know..
I know it works under XP with all the latest updates and drivers with a Geforce Ti4200/SB Awe64, and with a Radeon/SB Live.
I've had 2k SP3 installed long before I got Freelancer, but it's possible that it could be the problem. Anyone here using 2kSP3, a Geforce card, and a SB card that it works for?
I'm gonna dig around in the manual and figure out how to use 98 compat mode and see if that works. I'm desperate. :/ I pretty much got this game to play multiplayer (though the SP was great), and it sucks hearing about the exploits of my friends and not being able to join in. At this point, I'm willing to try even the most crackpot ideas anyone can come up with, but I'd really rather avoid formatting and reloading. I just don't have room to back up what I need.
Edit: As for the DSL router question, I haven't tried it directly connected to my DSL modem, but I don't see how that would affect it. I'm connected to the DSL modem via a hub, and I'm not using NAT or ICS or even IP Masquerading of any sort. I have a real-world IP, and even disabling anything resembling firewall/filtering rules doesn't affect it.

Okey everyone of you who has been having problems with the Freelancer LAN/Internet Crash BUG.....
For those who crash when trying to join a LAN/Internet game, we have finaly found a way to fix this problem. Howerver, many of you will not like this fix .
After about 8 hours of taring in and out hardwear and beating windows to death we found that one of windows newer patchs is screwing up some of us. What we did was reinstall windows without patching any thing. This fixed it, for those who dont want to do this you can use the windows restore and try and back up till it works. Im sure some day there will be a patch for this but it you really want to play online this is a quick fix.
Hope this will help you all out....

I got it to work without uninstalling windows. I had my video hardware accel two notches down, and I moved it up one notch and was able to actually connect without crashing. Unfortunately like a moron I updated video card drivers and now I can't get it to work. I tried to rollback and still couldn't connect, nor could I (for 5 hours) recreate the circumstances that let me connect earlier. Man i'm pissed.
Pentium4 1.5ghz
384mb pc2700
asus i845g board
RadeonSE 64MB VIVO
WinXP Pro (no service pack 1)
so that might disprove some hardware theories out there.
If I reinstall windows without reformatting, would that work? I don't want to lose any settings or information, but do you think I could wipe the updates clean by reinstalling?

I really think its the Windows XP... I think I'll try to install Win 2k or 98... Maybe itll work better on those...
But have you looked the console when serving...
For me it reads that trying to connect to list server and connection failse then again connecting, and it keeps going and going... Could this be a problem? I dont have connection to internet, only plaing at lan.
But when it crashes it give the same warning message than comes to others too.
Interestingly the server crashes at once if i connect to the server first from the same machine that the server is being run at and the from another. The same time i connect from the other pc the server goes down... (I only have 2 pc's at lan)
