Game crashes on joining an MP server

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 11:32 pm

Dunno if anyone else has noticed this, but everybody reporting this problem (myself included) has a Geforce card of some kind. Myself and the original poster have a Geforce 2 MX, 2 other posters had TI4400 and 4600s. Has /anyone/ had this problem that does not have a Geforce card? I'm gonna start looking into drivers, hardware acceleration, etc. If I find a solution, I'll be sure to post it.

I have a Ti4400 and mine runs perfect. I've never had one problem with Freelancer... I dunno I think I would be looking elsewhere for the solution and not at the video card on this one. I believe it's more of a sound card issue myself... 3 of them have a SB..one and Audigy the other two a Live! What sound card do the rest have?

I was looking into the video card thing too and a friend of mine has a Ti4200 and it runs fine for him. I also have a soundblaster card, but it's an old, integrated one (originally an Ensoniq AudioPCI 1371, but Creative bought out Ensoniq).

However, in trying to make sure I have the latest drivers (I'm currently using the ones Win2k detected and installed on its own), the ones from creative.com didn't detect that card in my system. I know that's what I have, I did tech support for the company (Gateway) I bought the system from.

I think my next step, to ensure that it's not a SB issue for me, at least, is to disable the onboard sound and slap my spare (a Yamaha XG-based card) in and see how it goes. It doesn't make sense that this is a sound card issue, but I bought the spare because of another game I had that had stability issues (in general) with my onboard.

I think it's the SB drivers that have the compatibility issue with the game.. please let us know if switching the cards helped.

no, it can´t be the sb-drivers, i got onboard sound and it doesn´t work either.

Same problem
Windows XP Professional
AMD T-Bird 1 GigHertz
512 MB RAM(PNY)
ATI Radeon 9000pro(128)
80 GB 7200RPM Western Digital HDD
Cable modem by RR
Soundblaster Live!
Abit KT-7Raid Motherboard
All drivers recently updated including DirectX9

I'm going to kill something if I can't get this to work with MP soon....

Well, I uninstalled my sound driver, and disabled the sound card in bios. Still no MP lovin'. I'm fairly stumped at this point, I've tried everything I can think of.

I've updated my video, sound and nic drivers, tried it at every level of hardware acceleration it'll work at, reinstalled the game several times, re-extracted remoteserver.dll from the cabs on the CD a time or two, even had a friend make a .par file so I could ensure all the files in the EXE folder weren't corrupted, and so on. In my professional opinion, ****'s broke. Any chance we can prod the devs into looking into this? I haven't been able to find anything resembling an 'official' forum at Microsoft's site (and digitalanvil.com now redirects to microsoft.com/games) or I'd post it there.

I really want to play this MP, and it's pissing me off that I can't. HELP!

You guys are all also on XP and 1 on Win2k. I have a SB Live and GF card on Win 98 with no issues.

Everyone have updated OS patches?

Can you try Win98 mode instead?

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 9:38 pm

I have Win2k sp3 with all the latest updates (except for one security update for IE6 that won't download from windowsupdate.microsoft.com, for some reason). I wasn't fully up to date when I started having this problem.

Win98 mode? Never heard of a win98 mode, but I'm willing to try anything short of formatting. How do I do it?

Post Tue Mar 11, 2003 9:51 pm

Hmm, random idea. Everybody here have DX9? Anybody tried with other versions of DX? I read somewhere here that you had to have DX9 to play MP, so I dunno if that's even possible to test.

We need to get some Dev lovin' here.

Anyone using a no-CD crack? That could kill it (the error is in the file that gets patched)

Post Wed Mar 12, 2003 9:10 pm

I know people who use a no-CD cracks and it works fine for them. *shrugs*

Alright...I'm having this problem too. Running a GF2 MX With SB Live! Platinum. I used to have a Radeon 9700 Pro in this box, and it happened also, so I believe the problem is the SB Live!

Under Windows 98, multiplayer works. Under Windows 2000 or XP, it doesn't.

I'm suspecting there's some issue in the sound system. Funny thing...setting FL to Win98 compatibility in WinXP hangs the game, not crashes...gfx goes, sound stays. I've tried with with the No-CD crack, and nothing doing...same crash under normal mode, same hang under Win98 mode.

I've submitted a ticket to MS...let's see if it gets answered. I also added a link to this forum topic.

I had the same exact problem in the end it turned out to be my cable router if you're using a router try doing a direct connect from your computer to your broadband.

I tried connecting direct to the DSL modem, same bug. Anyone have any contact with MS with this problem?
