Okay, maybe the next should go in a FAQ somewhere.
The NIMO (and others) codec pack installs the Radium enhanced Fraunhoffer IIS MPEG-Layer 3 *PROFESSIONAL* codec, version 1.2.
The standard Microsoft codec pack installs the Fraunhoffer IIS MPEG-Layer 3 *ADVANCED* codec, version 1.9.xxx.
It is the version number that is important. The more recent versions of l3codec include support for wierd and wonderful playback options under directx, whereas the older Radium codec does not.
However, the Advanced codec will only let you encode up to 56kbps - that sucks. If, like most of you, this doesn't affect you, go ahead and kill the professional version [1.
But if, like me, you like to be able to encode up to 320kbps, this leaves you in the lurch. So yesterday I did some farting around and created a custom installer that puts BOTH versions of this codec in your system. I edited the resources so that they are easily identified (Advanced = Game-Compatible, Professional = Radium).
This installer is clean - it adds a new entry to add/remove ("Codec : Radium MP3 Codec v1.263"
and it uninstalls *EVERYTHING* related to the codecs. It also sets default options for codec compression (JS/S/etc).
It works, I've played Freelancer without a hitch after the first time.
If this sounds useful, let me know (lancersreactor?) where I can upload/send and get it hosted.
[1 To kill it, search the registry for all references to "l3acm" and "l3codec" and remove them. Additionally, remove the codec settings from :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Fraunhofer IIS
For 9x systems, edit system.ini and remove all lines under [Drivers32 that start with MSACM.L3 and any lines which mention either "L3CODECA.ACM" or "L3CODECP.ACM".
That is all.
