charon, think about it...how many times to we hear of people complaining that everything is working perfectly? I don't believe for one minute that "most" people are having these problems. No, statistics have shown time and time again that when you hear people complain aobut something, chances are those complaints are coming from a small minority of people that happen ot be very vocal aobut their problems.

I'm here to try and help (for free I might add), let's just peal back the layers and get to the core of your problem and try to fix it, okay? Explain what happen from the beginning, don't leave out any details and give me the chance to research the problem and offer a solution.

I'm looking at the characters file and I'm starting to work on the format. The problem is that the file is encrypted so it's becoming a pain in the ass to find the right algorythm & key to decrypt it.

Now anyone with programming / decrypting skills wants to help me here? If we get to understand the player character format we may find a way to fix whatever information god corrupted.

Just a thought,

last post about this subject
ok stinger i appréciate what your doing ...but before buying a game on often go to the official and unofficial forum to see what people think about the game and what are the problemes ! i think it s important to discuss about what is missing to the game and what are the probleme we can have with it ...dont have the truth but i can the server probleme is really here !! so don t buying this game before a patch is a good solution for most people...i am quite ...don t know how to say it but this is a pity that there not a better stability for server of this game , this a pity that there is an sécurity probleme with cheater , that is a pity that you cant just join a game by entering ips game , that is a pity that all the objects be always at the same place , that is a pity that the game doesn save you status to the other faction ( i can kill every police ship if i disconect and be back i will be no more reseaching by it ) , that s a pity that there is no political system with buying and administring station or starbase , i am sorry but i d like to have many more things i the game instead just searching the most big ship with the biggest weapon ! ...i think it s a pity ...just that ...i am very happy to find your forum and your help and i am very grattefull to you, but i think it s important to express about the game and the problem ...hope everybody can understand what i mean cause i stay french with a bad english )

This sure is weird. I feel like I don't have the same code as those who are running happy servers. Those of you who DON'T get the 'equip' error, are you running WinXP?

This is not a maintenance issue. I have a dedicated machine, built from good hardware, freshly installed OS (with unnecessary background windows crap disabled), running FLServer (also freshly installed) and not running anything else. Deleting accounts/reinstalling does not help. Approximately 10 minutes and users start getting booted, and are unable to get back in. The server does not "crash" per say, as I can still be logged in and playing w/ out problems (maybe my account is not yet corrupted?) after my friends have beed booted.

I'm sorry, but what else can one be expected to do when setting up a server? 10 million bucks says this is a bug in their code. I do not think user error is involved.

Maybe I'm a bit overconfident right now, but I think I've got it to work again.
The silly thing is this time i really did go through the readme thoroughly, and do the things that were told under the tenth (x) chapter.

I, for one, didn't have all those dlls and regfiles mentioned so the only thing I had to do was uninstalling NIMO codec pack, the game together with the accounts and installing WMFADist.exe in the redist folder before installing the game anew.

Who knows, maybe it'll crash soon again but it seems to work...

Just *bumping*.

I am setting up a dedicated persistent server soon, on a Dual P4 1.3Ghz - Dual T1 Pipe machine, and hope that this issue will be dealt with quickly...would hate to have the same problems.

The more that share on the issue the faster/better it can be figured out, right?

I've given up - just waiting for a patch

Me too... my server just went down again...

NeverWinter Nights went through something like this right after release as well.
It was called "ICB", the "Invalid Character Bug".
After about 20 players would log onto a server the server would not allow any other players to log in, and wouldn't store any newlymade characters either, until the server was shut down and restarted.

It only took about two months for them to fix it.

So, I say we put just a little faith in the people that spent so many years making this game...I am relatively sure they will fix it.

I'll keep this bumped, too. Another couple of quick and dirty ideas:

Many people probably play with Immersion's pirated version of the game. The crack for the game is a new freelancer.exe that has some modifications to disable the CD protection.

FL doesn't seem to care if a cracked or retail version of the game is connecting to a cracked or retail version of the server. I found it odd that the MP key you're issued has no effect on the registration status of the actual copy of the game you're playing. Most other games offer you a Key that you use to authenticate with some global server and if someone else has that key, you can't log in to play.

My thoughts were maybe the cracked copy ****s around with the FLserver.exe in some way, especially since a server has no way of knowing if an internet user has the retail version, or the cracked version. Of course this logic doesn't stand up for a LAN player with a retail copy who's still experiencing crashes, but it's an idea..

My other idea relates to when I first got the game, I had DirectX 9 installed from about 7 weeks ago. I was unable to connect to the global server... until I went to www.microsoft.com/directx and re-downloaded/re-installed DirectX 9. Many other people have also had this problem.

Then it magically worked, even though it shouldn't have given me a problem to begin wtih. Almost like they've made minor updates to DirectX9 in the past few months since it's initial release. Maybe this weird bug/feature/version difference has something to do with it?

Finally, I've noticed that Elite and E2 and some other 24/7 servers (Dark Times and McMahons South Tower) always seem to be up, and I've played on them for hours and hours without getting booted. Can anyone from those servers share their crash experiences/pipe line/hardware specs?
