The reason that Freeport 7 was destroyed was because the base was owned by the zoners, and therefore Rhienlanders, Liberty, Kushari or Bretonia forces had any kind of power inside that facillity. And as far as I know walking up to someone and killing them in the middle of a crowded space station will not go down too well with the Zoners.

What I dont get is how the Nomads knew that the theif was on Freeport 7?

i bet it was cause they just wanted to piss off Trent so there was a story and it would give him something to say over and over "he owes me 1 million credits"

If Freeport 7 was owned by the zoners, why did the station send defenders to escort the freighter out of the system? and why was liberty the first ones to get there? Is it possible FP7 was a liberty base?

its possible that it was a liberty base but who cares the aliens detected the theif because the atficat emitted some kind of radation that could be detected from the nomads and thats why everywhere u go death is sure to follow >8)

Ok, here's the long and short of it. The nomads, knowing the artifact could harm them, tracked our favorite thief to Freeport 7. Seeing an opportunity to both do away with the artifact, and start any number of wars between houses, they did the base in with a few well-placed torpedos. As for why there were Defenders at FP7? Could be they originally planned on having the base be near Liberty space, which would also explain why Trent was brought to Manhattan.
