Freelancer vs. Privateer

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Man for the love of God give it up already! There is no joystick support for the game and you whining about it will not provoke DA to release a special joystick patch just for you The game is simply not structured that way. You would be unable to inteact with the sub-menus and features of the neural net with a joystick. The response time would simply be too slow, it'd be like having a joystick as your primary device to intearct with Windows. We can undertsand that you like Privateer but c'mon... moaning about the many differences between it and Freelancer is just unproductive. You may have your opinion but don't keep posting the same thing on this forum like a troll does.

Did anyone manage to get the Tarsus all the way to the Steltek Derelict?

I did. In fact I made it through the entire storyline in it (along with the Orion, Galaxy and Centurion of course) with no cheats. The system was Delta Prime which you got to from Rygannon thru Delta, then Beta, then Gamma, then Delta Prime.

Ah, Salmon Kroiz, that's the 2nfd mission from Roman Lynch. Yup, those Demons packed a wallop with those torps. And actually the Kilrathi ambuse you described was really rather easy if you jsut follow the mission objectives and forget about fighting the 7 Demons you'll see. Just land and talk with the good Dr. about the artifact.

Yup, I think I played this game waaaaay too much as well. Welcome to the family Aye Capn, obviously you're in good hands here and being such a Privateer fan as you are, you'll fit right in.

This is for Aye Capn,

I can appraciate your interest and desire for the joystick. But if you do not get Freelancer your going to miss out on a great game. Being a dedicated Privateer fan, I can tell you I have a good feeling about Freelancer based on the feed back from so many sources. I do not think Privateer 2 was programmed or developed as carefully as Freelancer has been. I also would like the option to use a joystick..but the lack of one is not going to stop me from buying the game. And if the mouse interface works as well as I have read..then it will allow many more non-joystick would be jocks get to play a awesome game that could be better than Privateer. That is a good thing I think.

Now as far as the mission to get the Steltek gun..yeah I done that mission with no cheats or hacks( infact I finished the whole game, expansion pack and all with no cheats or hacks ). But I did it in my Centurion. Not the first try mind you. My son played all the way thru Privateer and the expansion pack without dying once ( his 2 second go at the game tho ). Beleave it not. I could never do that myslef. Having felt the destruction of my ship and me on several occasions. The hardest mission for me was the one with the Kilrathi in the asteroid fields getting to the derelict ship. At the Gamma quadrant, the one with all the dang asteriods at the jump points and many crazy Kilrathi attacking you.

But then who would want to play P2 anyway? I think I flew 3 missions before I realized it was going to remain as profoundly horrible as it began, and the last 2 missions were just me being generous.

But I thought you were angry at the fact that you can't use a joystick? I mean, Freelancer's atmosphere is hardly a fault. In fact, Freelancer has the most atmosphere in a space sim since Privateer (or WC4, take your pick). (By the way, many "joystick" users liked P2)

Alas, I am no longer the Tarsus Top Gun ... but it's cool to meet someone who is!

About the blockade ... you can actually talk to the Demons and convince them to stand down, then fly in at your leisure!

(No doubt they are wary of the pilot of the battle-scared old relic begging, "Let me go, I'm not worth it!"

Man, I haven't played Privateer in forever ... I tried to play "X" but couldn't really get into it. Someday someone will get it right again. Maybe X2?

Ok guys...I want to say I hope Freelancer carries on the spirit of Privateer..but is not exactly like Privateer. Even as much as I loved Privateer ( as if I really needed to say this after all my posts about Privateer..*grins ) I am looking forward to many improvements over it in Freelancer. So if the mouse only control is a improvement....thats a good thing . I do not understand a true Privateer fan arguing about that or anything else in the game if the game as a whole is a big stepup from Privateer. I for one am very thankful to the DA team for working hard on this game and not rushing it out to make a quick buck.
For the injoyment Freelancer may give me..50 bucks is aweful cheap entertainment.

I also loved privateer, but one thing I thought needed improvement was the fact that you could HAMMER a retro, his shields totally down, his hull/armor fully red, one more shot and BANG it's over for him, and the reto would sit there talking trash like he had YOU over a barrel...

I hope that FL is different, that NPC's (pirates, ect.) have some kind of morale..If it's 8:1 and you kill 7, the last dude should RUN!! Or at least beg for mercy!!
my .02 cents

What do you mean they cut the power? How could they cut the power man, they're animals!!

slippedwrench, ah good, an aliens fan!

here's a few : Hudson "6 meters...5 meters!"
Hicks: "That can't be, that's inside the damn room you're reading it wrong!"
Hudson: "It's readin' right, man!"

or..

Hudson: " Oh that's just ****ing great man! We're in some real pretty s*** now! Game over man, game over! "What're we gonna do now!?!"
Burke: "Why don't we build a fire, sing a couple of songs, how 'bout that?"

Well, they did have a "desperation message" though.

When their ship was nearly destroyed, pirates would sometimes say "this crate's about to explode" , Kilrathi would go "I am battered ,human, yet unbeaten!" , and the retros would wonder whether the God of Man had abandoned them.
