Freelancer vs. Privateer
This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

This question is for those beta testers who may have played Privateer. Privateer was my favorite game of all time. I played it all the way thru , with the expansion pack too. I still have it. My question is; apart from the much better graphics is Freelancer in your opinion better than Privateer? Is it as deep or deeper than Privateer? Do you think the universe is as big or bigger than Privateer? I will say this..Privateer 2 was a major letdown. The game play and story was much richer in Privateer. I have Freelancer on preorder and have been following it's developement over the last few years with hopes of a follow up to Privateer that is even better then it was. I know this was Cris Roberts plans for Freelancer when he first tlaked about it.
Privateer had more systems....Freelancer has more content....
Edit: Privateer II was misnamed in my opinion anyway.

Thanks for replying Stinger,
So..I assume your saying that Freelancer while having less systems to go to..has even more places to go and explore? One of the big pleasures of Privateer was exploring and finding unknow parts and discovering the ancient alien ship in the end. I even found a jump gate that was unmarked even in the strategy guide. It was a short cut to a another system in the sector. The one thing I never did find tho..was the weapon cach of the Kilrathi the game talked about. I spent countless hours looking for that place, but had lots of fun doing it! One thing I will not do in Freelancer is cheat to get a item or find a secret. That spoils the game for me.

There have been a few people now saying that the Asteroid fields in Privateer were dangerous.
All you guys had to do was moving your nose up and down and you would never had crashed into an asteroid! It was so damn simple!
Btw, do you know that you could make enemies stop attacking you simply by taunting them?

Oh yes ...
this discussion reminds me of the "special situations" in Privateer when your ship was nearly exploding and your only chance was to reach this damned planet or station out there.
What a feeling when you finally could land and the gameplay changed to the landing-sequence
Oh man, i am really really looking forward to Freelancer.
BTW: great forum, i feel familiar with this Freelancer-Familiy!

I remeber those asteroids as well. The thing that was very odd, was all asteroids would converge on your ship or something like that. If you went to rear camera view the asteroids would actually be flying backward if I remeber correctly.
I feel like a smuck, I never even heard of any of those easter eggs.

I didn't have internet back then so I never heard about the cheats. Also I somehow missed the rumor about a secret weapons cache. But I can remember being ripped apart and dying before the jump was completed. Fighting in the asteroid fields was difficult, but if you were careful they caused more damage to the enemy. Outside of combat I didn't find the asteriod fields dangerous unless I was in too big a hurry. It was fun finding the alien gun. I wish they had made a sequel with much more hidden stuff to find. (Hint - hint to the DA folks currently enjoying their vacations) I found the uncharted jump gate also. It was fun.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a whole uncharted territory with hidden stuff all over? No maps, you have to make your own as you go. No place to market or mount your goodies, you've got to get back to civilization to do that.
20 day countdown has begun !!!

Those asteroid fields were deadly. I hated going through them, they slowed me down! Fighting in them wasn't too bad, normally the enemy (whoeve it may be at the time, Retros, Pirates, Bounty Hunters...militia) would slam into a asteroid on their own accord. Alas, I too, spent much time on daring raids into Kilrathi infested territories looking for the hallowed out asteroid. Never found it...

Hey guys, it's nice to hear the nostalgic stories. The asteriod converging problem was only in WC2. In privateer you can actually stop your ship in an asteroid field and they will NEVER hit you. In that sense, privateer's asteroids were very realistic. You could hang out in the asteroids and wait for a merchant to come in range and...well you know. The two things that I liked most were that they added new technology in Righteous Fire, and that after you beat the single player story line you could go to...I think it was Roman Lynch in Pyrenees to have your record wiped clean as many times as you could spend 200,000 credits (I had over 3,000,000) I was allied with everyone except the retros and the kilrathi! That made drug running real sweet.... You could even watch other pirates go after a merchant ship and not get the blood on your hands so to speak but grab the cargo. Anything like that possible in FL? Watch a battle-reap the rewards...?
