well you probably didn't have a Tv on dat dere Craggy Oisland back then.

what about The Flashing Blade? or Belle & Sebastian? that was tragic that was, you wanted to slit your wrists at the end of most episodes. or Follyfoot Farm? or White Horses?

and then of course from the same era of wonderfulness are Trumpton, Camberwick Green, and Chigley. funny how no-one ver found out who's baby Mrs Honeyman's kid was, or quite where Mr Honeyman was.. I think the kid was a Chippy Minton off the old-block myself..

What about the Island of the Golden Monkey, or maybe it was the legend... not sure. It was centered around this hotel on an island and the main characters were a Indiana jones wannabe pilot and is fat breaded friend and they flew a water landing plane and they had crazy adventures... Anyone? Beuller?

@Topher: Sorry but I can't say as I do but you have reminded me of two classics. Your mention of "Golden Monkey" reminded me of "Monkey", remember, the samurai lad that looked like a monkey?

How cool is that?

...and..."Rescue", maybe one for Esqui but it was about a helicopter paramedic team and their nifty chopper could land on water...WOW!

Monkey!!!

it's pure class, from weird opening titles to Gandara song ending, and of course the coolest theme tune ever..

it's one of the few japanese shows that actually works better dubbed - here's an example why...

Tripitaka: Monkey I forbid you to look at me like that!
Monkey: but Boss, you look so attractive...
Tripitake: Silence! i am a priest of Buddha!
Monkey: You look like a girl to me..
Tripitaka: what do mean I look like a girl?
Monkey: ...you've got bumps and everything...and lips.. and a girls face
Tripitaka: Be quiet!
Monkey: ok then but I still think you look like a girl..

Monkey is just comedy gold-dust

wierd Monkey intro and I still haven't got a clue what its about...

*Born from an egg on a mountain top
The punkiest monkey that ever popped
He knew every magic trick under the sun
To tease the Gods
And everyone and have some fun...*

in case you aint guessed, Monkey is required viewing at Taw Towers.

I loved monkey as a kid...it didn't matter that I didn't understand it.

*waves 2 fingers in front of his mouth* aaah pigseeey pfft pfft

A friend of mine bought the whole series on DVD, so we had a bit of a "monkey sesh" a few months ago (we got hammered and laughed our way through about 6 episodes). But I saw the first ever one for the first time - the one where he explodes out of a rock and takes a p*ss behind buddha's index finger. Very weird. But it kinda made sense at the time - why they were animals etc.

Shame I was too hammered to remember it though

On the off chance that your guys are serious about not knowing what the Monkey is about:

Here's one backgrounder for you

In fact the adventures of the Monkey King are a classical Chinese hero tale.

Post Wed Dec 07, 2005 11:53 am

I knew that. I saw a Chinese film called Legend of the Monkey-King once and a moad series on TV East called Super Little Fanta Heroes which had Monkey in it. Yes I know its supposed to be the story of how the Priest Tripitaka (who wasn't a girl) broght the scrolls of the Buddha from India to China.

it's all that stuff at the beginning I don't get. why is the King of the Monkeys born from the Egg of Primal Thought?

Post Wed Dec 07, 2005 12:16 pm

Well the Monkey King isn't a mortal so he can't have a normal birth.

As in the linky, some versions refer to the "egg" as a magical stone or boulder atop the Mountain. And the legend now is an admixture of both Taoist and Buddhist ideas into one. Both place emphasis on mentality, meditation, etc. So the egg of primal thought would be a natural "origination" of things supernatural from that viewpoint.

ah so Monkey, though immortal, is the primal state of man, and the journey is about the control of the primal urges, the animal nature, through experience and meditation as per the teachings of the Buddha? is that it?

Post Wed Dec 07, 2005 3:03 pm

...sheesh, I leave ya for two minutes! If you are gonna disect my childhood telly on a confuscionist level would you kindly wait 'till I have a drink in me hand?

Post Wed Dec 07, 2005 3:47 pm

I'll second that. Its one big conspiracy - they want you to think that its deep and meaningful, based on extremely old stories and musings...but its actually just a cheeky monkey bloke, with a guy who thinks he's a pig and a boy who is blatantly a bird, travelling around on clouds and having a laugh at the expense of a tall lanky geezer who no-one really knew what he was supposed to be (a fish possibly?).

Oh yeah and he had cool sideburns and a pimp-like headband...

Post Wed Dec 07, 2005 5:10 pm

*sigh*
Sounds like you folks had ALL the cool, cheesy shows over there... all we seem to get are the banal and incredibly stupid - H.R.Pufinsutff, lidsville, etc

- and Dinky toys are next to impossible to find. Had the UFO Interceptor, once...

Post Wed Dec 07, 2005 7:36 pm

Primal state of man? ... Yeah. Basically. Or at least a representation of the core of being uncorrupted by complex rationales associated with civilizations but with the imperfections of mortal humans very much present in the Monkey King.
