format was def necessary then he might as well do it through XP. FAT32 is a load of ancient crap anyway and only has uses for DOS functions and other legacy stuff, but as Jag's mostly wanting his PC for games and multimedia, NTFS is far superior.

Erm.. I onced used NTFS. and particularly hated it. maybe because its hard to do maintenance by means of expert conditions. Just when a virus Infects _RESTORE folder i'll definitely need DOS to crap the whole folder. btw i did not see any difference between FAT32 and NTFS at the moment. or maybe i just disable some of the functions to optimize the XP.but then again i Choose maintainablity under emergency conditions. Lets say IF you HDD got Bad Sector. I'd really prefer to transfer to my Doc's to my second partition.(For Your info, i Never put my docs in The same folder as my Windows. For Security Reasons Obviosly and to make Sure I dont accidently format my windows with the docs.)

Yes! BUt what shop do you recommend? Like Best Buy? Or Radioshak?

Post Mon Jul 05, 2004 4:59 pm

Best Buys does pretty good work. But if you got a computer only store near you, try them and see what they charge first. Good luck.

Oh Gods, I don't think there are any REAL computer stores here in my hmble town. I'm also wondering if I should tell my parents or wait till' my b-day and ask? I could just work it off by lawn mowing.

Best is to try your parents first. See if they will cover the cost of repair, with you cutting grass and pay them back. If they say no, then cut grass, saving the money till you can get enough to put it in for repair. They will some times charge $20 to check it out and give you the news of whats wrong. Forgive the preachy aspect, but keep your parents involved in what ever you choose to do. It shows respocibility. They may help because of it. *gets off soap box*

I'm just worried about punishment.

Post Tue Jul 06, 2004 11:07 pm

War - No problem. So you've checked the connections every time, but have you tried replacing the cables?

Post Wed Jul 07, 2004 1:32 pm

cables are brand new, and so is the hard drive.

@Jaggy

Punishment would be something to worry about if you did not also have a workable plan to raise the money on your own, I think.

Have you considered mowing other people's lawns as well to speed up the cash intake? If you show some ingenuity and initiative it can go a long way toward
showing your parents that you are acting responsibly. That's what parents want their kids to become. Responsible, sensible and able to and willing to break a sweat to come up with workable solutions to problems.

There HAS to be a computer store somewhere in your area. Are there no businesses that operate in your town that uses computers? Those guys HAVE to have access to an outfit that fixes computers. Is there a favorite store you go to? You might try asking that store's manager who he/she uses to fix their computer.

PS - Have you Googled?

Hmm responisble, well I'm certainley never going to be responsible . Oh well, I still need practice for lawns though so I'm going to wait awhile before asking. Well I don't know of any business in my town that uses computers and has an IT person, mostly because I don't know most of the businesses. Oh and do you think it will help speed up cash inflow if I use my dad's tractor? He's teaching mye how to use that as well. What do you mean Googled?:d I've broken my arm, oh well. See you in 4 weeks.
