I need help!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

sorry folks just got back to this after a busy first day at work.

@Ajim, I'm trying to keep it simple for the youth, if a format was def necessary then he might as well do it through XP. FAT32 is a load of ancient crap anyway and only has uses for DOS functions and other legacy stuff, but as Jag's mostly wanting his PC for games and multimedia, NTFS is far superior. Myself I would slave and clean install to a new drive then archive off, but that's not a luxury Jag has.

@Jag, how are you getting on? if you want to email me about this, take the DIESPAMDIE out of my addy? You're in Oz, right? if you can't get hold of me quickly enough, I'm sure Mustie and Esquilax will be happy to help, they're "ockers"

@warrior, they run off a separate interface so aren't necessarily classed as using the IDE databus, so the question is a non-sequitur

I'll be sure to do that Mr. "Fleet Admiral". Well I got the installation running buuuut, the BSOD popped up again so now I'm at a loss at what to do. I haven't tried all the options yet so I'm not sure if there is no hope.

Taw, could it be a bad sector on the hard drive? Is it possible he can scan for it?

Post Tue Jun 29, 2004 12:07 am

Taw - Jag isn't an Australian! (As far as I know)

Post Tue Jun 29, 2004 10:03 am

its possible its a front end bad cluster but he needs to get to windows in safe mode at least to run chkdsk /f. if the repair install is bsod-ing then the installation is fooked, either a full reinstall over the top which will wipe out all the existing settings, or reformat to NTFS and a clean install, which obv wipes out everything. but if there's physical damage to the drive then thats no dam good either.

can you get your hands on another hdd, Jag? to put in as a master to slave the existing to, then you can install XP to the new one and then pull all your stuff off the old one?

Yes. From a prior experience with Esqy, it would appear that the former acolyte of the Hareheaded one lives somewhere Americanized if not in America proper.

wtf do I think he's Orstraylayan then?

Post Tue Jun 29, 2004 4:33 pm

Post bellum Utopiae, when Jaggy first entered into the OT (and never was able to leave ), I seem to recall that the context or mood of discussion was such that his taking sides with Esqy seemed to imply some sort of allegiance with Oz..... not sure exactly what the discussion was but this is when 'Lax acquired his acolyte if only temporarily.

Poor Jaggy, gamely taking you on Taw, not knowing ... er... well ... not knowing.

Ha I'm not Austrailian nor do I intend to become that. I live in Minnesota, U.S. anyways. I don't think I'll be able to aquire another Hard-Drive or whatever(how you get another one I don't even know). Well I'm not understanding most of this, I'll have to take a computer course in highschool or college and then become a slave to Dell or Microsoft.

ya, i know... but also what is an "ide #1 error" because i keep getting it now when i use my external and i shut it down like it says in the instructions and crap. but i only get it when i loos my cd rom because that didnt start happening till i got my external drive, but when i stop my external and reboot. i get the "ide #1 error" and it sucks when your wanting to play freelancer...

Post Tue Jun 29, 2004 6:53 pm

@Warrior,

Could you be more specific please? Are you starting up the PC with the external being recognized by Windows and then terminating the external? Why are you doing that if that is the case?

Post Wed Jun 30, 2004 6:13 pm

i booted up the pc with the external and everything being reconized, then i can open and cose the cd rom (ie put in an cd or whatever) and then the pc wont reconize it. so ill reboot and get the dang "ide error #1". i also get it after i diconect the external drive and reboot, ive also reformated and i still get it.

External drives are sometimes recognised as bootable HDDs which can cause problems, but I'd suggest checking the cable connections and jumper settings. Maybe you have more than two drives set to "Slave", or something.

You're probably gonna have to detail out the steps you took when you first installed the external, including what you swapped out to do it, etc. Detail out everything, even the stuff you think is too obvious to mention.

Well I don't think I'll be able to fix it by myself, so I'm gonna try the help line sometime and if that doesen't work it's off to the shop. What shop do you recommend to try and fix it?
