I'm somewhat confused here.
It doesn't seem like ff's photography has changed an awful lot since his first few posts other than he's been using black and white photography a lot more.
Suddenly it's gone from "Your framing is all wrong" to "Wow, you have an incredible eye for photography" just by setting his camera to black and white!?
ff, your photographs are very good and keep it up, this is not any criticism of you, it just amuses me that by taking the same photos with less colour, everyone else thinks they're works of art?

actually I think you'll find it was me who was commenting on his framing etc...and if you read my major post on page 2 you'll see that I'm still trying to give constructive criticism.

And for the record, I still think the b&w shots look washed out. The black levels are far too dull....no crispness.

But ff is new to photography, and it is definitely worth giving him positive comments as well as negative. Sometimes you can shoot 10-15 reels and only have one decent photo to show....but its worth it for that one. In the case of the recent canterbury ff shoot, I'd say that his best overall has to be the one of the furry car - its well framed, the colour is good and its an unusual subject.

that's because he's using a monochrome conversion of colour digital images rather than using black & white high contrast film like I suggested. Yet another example of the superiority of the traditional, tried and tested methods over new technology.

aaaah...well if he's doing that then he needs to invest in a good photoshop book and learn how to play with levels, contrast and brightness properly.

I thought they looked a bit washed out!

I was taking it for granted that it was understood that these are demonstrations of a first effort. For first efforts, I believe there are good reasons to provide words of encouragement. They are far from cr*p photos.

ok, so colour from now on? also would it help to increase the picture quality? ive got it set on good at the moment, which is why they are so small.

Nah, it wasn't that. I just don't see how removing the colour from a photograph can make it any better? I wasn't really commenting on ff's pics but rather the change in opinion that came about when ff used black and white photography.
@ff, don't listen to me, most photos I take come out crap, I'm no expert.

I think it depends on what you take a pic of wether you should use colour or black and white.

I liked "Another Bike" and "Morris Minor" in b/w, but the "Toyota Supra" I personally would have taken in colour, just as "A clock tower".
I don't know why actually, but it just seems that in some pictures the colour is missing (uhm...Yeah).

My favorite one is probably the "Morris Minor", cause it realy looks like one of those "oldy" pictures, but I'm sure that's some kinda technique you used.

Keep it up ff, I realy like it and I've been thinking for a while to start something like this myself.

the supra was silver, wont get much colour out of that the morris minor was done in sepia

Also would a steam train be better as a colour photo or black and white?

actually silver is one of the most colourful colours! think I'm talking out of my arse? Try recreating a CONVINCING silver effect in photoshop and you'll realise how difficult it is. Photographing silver objects in colour tends to be a lot better because of the colours that are involved in the reflections of the surface.

I also think that a steam train would be better taken in colour if you know how to get the best out of the colours on the train....the smoke, the engine, the doors, there's a lot of subtle colour that you can pull out.

ff I'd suggest that if you are going to use digital, stick to colour, if you want to play with b&w pick up a £5 disposable b&w camera and snap the occasional shot with it. When they're developed you'll see what I was talking about with the black levels depth.
