Not Such Good News for Pirated Copies of XP

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

So... Microsoft has high prices because they can? It's not due to piracy? I'm so disillusioned; I don't know what to believe in anymore.

Well, I guess that it's bad news for pirated copies of XP. MS have denied the statment made by their employee. It's the same old story; the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing *shakes head*.

Boy, some folks are going to be mad. Me, I'll but a copy as soon as its available.

*Gasp* You don't have a legitmate copy already?

of the SP2, I own 3 legitiment copys of XP I'll have you know.

The first I bought at the midnight sale the day it went on sale, the second came with my current computer, and the 3rd came with the laptop I had but was stolen, minus the disks, as they were at home. Let them try to repair it now, heehee.

You have three legitimate copies? Sure you do *wink* .

No, the Pain in my wallet is not a good thing. When I got the computer I have now, I sold the old one, but put winME on it I did not want to waist $197.00. But when I got htis one, it had OEM on it so I just shelved the other. The laptop, I had for exactly 30 days when it was stolen out of my truck. And guess what, my auto insurance does not cover it. Now I'm out $800 and still have to make the payments. Major bummer.

You could always sell those spare copies to friends and relatives. If they are not convinced, tell them that XP has "Eky's Seal of Approval" (in comparison to other versions of Windows, but not Linux) .

Do you by chance run Linux on any machines? I wanted to, but without a easyer set up, and Wine to run some windows based programs, my internet acess, I lost intrest. And, the old clunker that I have running ME with 64mb ram and 3.ogb hd, I played major Hell tring to get it off of there. It took forever to get it to boot to the floppy and fDisk the thing. It would not "see" the windows CD in the drive.

Unfortunately no; I have worked with it, and like it, but until they start making games and drivers specifically for Linux, I'll have to stick with Windows.

From the BBC Linky:

Microsoft has worked out the 20 most pirated product IDs and SP2 will not install and run on any copy of XP bearing one of those numbers.

So there are 20 product IDs that cannot be used with SP2. That's not a very thorough attack plan.

I think there is more to it than that.

Ahh yes. They've probably left holes in the system though - specific holes for what may be illegitimate copies of XP. A german friend of mine (really, a friend of mine, not me! ) had it happen to him a couple of weeks ago - before his firewall/virus program booted it off. The German telecom apparently were scanning his machine for illegal mp3s etc, which means maybe MS could be loopholes into the system for themselves.

I don't know. I'm just guessing.
