Not Such Good News for Pirated Copies of XP

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Not Such Good News for Pirated Copies of XP

Apparently, MS's "ultimate patch" (aka SP2) that has been hyped up since last year, can be installed upon both legitimate copies of XP, as well as on those that have illegal serial keys (pirated copies). I'm sure that this will be good news for many people on TLR *looks sidelong at Taw* . Here is a link to the article, but it's interesting in that in it, "Mr. Goffe" states that

It was a tough choice, but we finally decided that even if someone has pirated copy of Windows, it is more important to keep him safe than it is to be concerned about the revenue issue...
Why am I suddenly suspicious of this service pack?

Legal Disclaimer: I am not advocating piracy in any way .

I would recommend that anyone who is not a wholesome full price paying or legitimately discounted price paying XP customer not implement SP2.

If you thought for one minute that MS is not interested in lassooing every last illegal copy user, you are just one heck of a naive puppy.

Bad business decision. All that will do is incurage a problem, not stop it. A shame. If folks want be "Safe", they can do it the right way. My pocket has been hit 3 times now. They can do it once.

Indy - Your cynicism is growing; Taw's views are beginning to rub off on you .

Don't need Jal's influence to be cynical.

I have a pirated version of windows Well not really a pirated version, well actually, its a copied disc of a friend who got a copied disc off another friend who has that Dell Windows XP cd thingy. I havent patched windows once and AVG and Adaware work fine for protecting the comp, even after several hard lessons learned it works fine now .

Post Mon May 10, 2004 12:44 am

I wouldnt DL any UPDATE at ALL they have tracers for MS so they can send the cops after you. Why do you think they say SP2 works with Pirate version?

Post Mon May 10, 2004 1:13 am

Good one Para .

Darkness - Actually, SP2 "breaks" some games and apps because of some of the new security features. I doubt that I'll get it.

Snipa - Now you're being paranoid! Oh no, it's spreading! Everyone outside this house is against me?!?! Arrrgghhhh!?!?!

What came first: the pirates or the extortionate prices? I know the reason i dont go-a-buyin' is because im not a small nation and dont have that kind of capital. Microsoft are not LOOSING any business because there is no possible way i could afford to run my computer on anything other than the OEM package.

Likewise, the world and his brother would be still in the stone age of computing if microsoft enforced the charging of applications, we'd have far FAR less cool apps for one thing.

If, in your ideal world, we gave Microsoft a chance and NO ONE pirated for 3 years solid, do you honestly think that they'd lower their prices? do you think that they'd make the packages suddenly available for the masses at the price of a videogame or something?

NO YOU DAMN ASS

Prices are prices, pirating or no, the packages are gonna stay as they are. And hell, if you dont wanna pay that shocking ammount, you could aways join us. We chose not to pay those prices a LONG freaking time ago.

That flame brought to you by... Arcon! Flaming since 2001!

He raises some salient points though.

lol. I'm the same Taw....although strictly speaking, my current OS came bundled with a custom machine, so I suppose I did pay for it....but its the first!

<rant>
@supersnipa - As for pirates raising the price of software - HOW NAIVE ARE YOU!?! I'm presuming you are a still a school kid and are yet to learn what the real world costs, therefore I won't flame you down. But know this, the price of software is so ridiculously high because of the massive corporate machines that produce it. The charge a lot because they CAN. Its a vicious circle....people pirate software and music NOT just because they can, but because they are backed into a corner...everyone would prefer nice packaging, manuals, cd-inlays, cover artwork, hologram cd's and the like, but the fact of the matter is that its just too damn expensive. Therefore piracy will exist until the corporations stop patting themselves on the back and reduce the consumer cost.

Then of course you have the corporation big wigs who appear on TV saying stuff like "piracy is evil, piracy is a cancer, piracy makes the "ordinary" man on the street have to pay more for his software". B*ll*cks. This is quite simply a very good business decision to encourage more people to bankrupt themselves whilst buying their products....and people like you obviously fall for it.

I buy as much software and music as I can afford. After that, I have no quarms in "acquiring" software that I need to do my work and I certainly have no quarms about trying out music albums before I buy them. I am actually one of those people that really does "try before I buy". Why should I fork out £15 ($30) for a CD that is absolute b*ll*cks??! I think its my right as a consumer to test the product first....you can in every other industry so why not in these two? If I bought a t-shirt and it didn't fit, I'd return it and get a refund. But have you ever tried taking an album back to a music store and saying "I'd like a refund, this CD is offensive to my hearing"??? I'm the same with software - but luckily for me, most of my favourite design products usually come with a 30 day trial version or something similar so I do actually get to test the water before I buy.

I'm sorry but if you work hard for your cash, I think you should have the right to decide properly what you are going to spend it on.
