Yanks?

Wolfy help me out here.

Alright, The term "Yanks" seems to be in use by British and Australians and all non-Americans a lot on this post. To clarify this, I will tell you what Americans are "Yanks" and which aren't.

Americans who live in the New England and Northeast states of the US are commonly called Yanks as that was given to them before the American Revolution. These states include: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and especially Massachusetts and New York. I, from the great state of Ohio in the midwest prefer to be called a "Buckeye" or "Buck" for short (Stinger is also from Ohio). For Americans in general I can't think of a new name for us in shorthand, but I don't appreciate being associated with Massachusetts.

Mods - Sorry for any politics there may be here, but I think it needed said to stop a major argument. I am open to all comments and will clean it out if you wnat me to, It just had to be stated. This Yank business is driving Wolfy and I crazy.

when i post; do i say anything like "have any of you brits or aussies or monkeys seen this?"...no!
i post things like "have any of you seen this"...see you notice i left it out a name, its as easy as that. stop being lazy and type in AMERICANS

Its weird, yanks was around from WWII US=yanks, Germany+ Jerry, English + Tommys. Though here, yanks were those above the MasonDixon line, below the line, Hicks, country boys, southerners. I just prefer a more regional Georgians, not to be confused with the former Soviet republic.

Americans, eh? Unless you conquered the rest of your continent overnight I don't think I'll be calling you that anytime soon.

What I can do is start calling you Yank, Hick or Yank/Hick depending on what knowledge I have of your origins.

Yankees.

Don't forget that during the Civil War, all Federals were Yankees. All Confederates were Rebels. The Ohio contingent that fought in the war were NOT Buckeyes but Yankees. The State flag for which I think the "Buckeye" became the nickname, was not adopted until 1902.

Very technically speaking, only residents the original Confederate States and those States that did not exist at the time of the Civil War can protest to being called a Yankee.

Actually, those federals were bluebellys. Montana, is between midwest to westerner, not yank. And NEVER get an Italian riled.

Yank = hick? Where'd you get that? Since I'm a New Yorker, being called a Yankee or Yank doesn't really bother me. But I do acknowledge that it isn't meant to be flattering to be called a Yank. But a hick? That's a new one.

Perhaps it is better to not use nicknames of nationalities? I know that restraint has been exercised by the Australian contingent when referring to the British, for example. Perhaps we can agree that there is bound to be someone who will take umbrage unnecessarily?
