What's wrong with WinXP Pro? It is almost identical to the Home edition, but has a few more features.

well now Wolfy has assumed the mantle of IT guru, i have a few question..

Wolfy I need to establish serial communication to an Eltron label printer with my PC but only for a Unix-emulator, oh I also need to make this networkable. Can you help me?

also I'm suffering a RAID problem in that while my boot drive on the array is always fine, once every few weeks one of the other 3 will start to fail and I get pci.sys errors in W2k boot. Is it my Highpoint 372 IC controller failing or something else?

Also i need to rebuild an NTFS partition that has some data on that I need to get off, but unfortunately this was part of a RAID array AND the drive has bizarrely changed its ident from Maxtor 6E40L0 to Maxtor N40P; any ideas on how to approach this?

Esquilax, Mustang, Chet, do NOT answer these questions! I want Wolfy to answer...

It's true that people seem to like Pro better on the whole (at least, that's what my research shows) but that's in large part because morons upgrade from 95 again and again to XP Home (since thier not profesional ) which Xp doesn't like and they have problems. I have also heard that Pro is slightly buggier than Home. (I did my research b4 getting new computer )

What I'd like to know is what happens if Linux gets more popular? Windows can only go so far, same with mac OS. Imagine 3 competing operating syatems...

ive wondered.....i got 98 as all of you know, would i have to upgrade to windows 2000, then to milenium just to be able to upgrade to XP?
thats what my dad said, but of course hes doesnt know jack about computers

example:
when we got our first computer (windows 98) we got the best (he thought) graphics card (which served me well btw), which was a radeon 7200.....three years later, we get a new computer, he wants to get the same graphics card! why the hell would u want to get the same graphics card three years later!!?? and he ends up getting a radeon 7000!! and that doesnt even support 32 bit color!!

If you haven't upgreaded yet... don't! I've heard nasty things about XP from people who did. Than again, I'll let the techy gurus confirm or deny that...

Anyone who knows better should never just simply upgrade OSes. A clean wash by fdisk and a full install of the newer OS is always much better. And me myself have never had any bugs with XP Pro. Ive had XP installed for almost a year now. I think it was last spring break when i first installed XP Pro on my machine and ive experienced no major bugs at all. In fact the only probs ive been having have been caused by the apps themselves.

well said EB

Post Sat Feb 07, 2004 5:31 pm

@wolfy - Do what I did, whenever you dad has computer problems, tell him the computer is outdated and needs upgraded. meanwhile save up until you can threaten to spend your life savings on a new computer. That worked, and I got a computer of my own that is a lot better than the one my parents got in '99 that they still have.

Post Sat Feb 07, 2004 5:55 pm

Yep, EB has it in one. So many problems are caused by copying a new OS over an old one.

Taw, you had Wolfy on the ropes with those IT questions. Nasty!

Whoop-de-freakin-do-da. I'll probably still be using Windows 98 when this new one comes out.
