Most ST fans would agree with you, I think. NCC = Naval Construction Contract.

I've always been disappointed by that answer. It is just too pedestrian for me.
Oh well.

It was based on the Aircraft Regrestration codes. But Matt Jefferies added the second "C"

I also think NX is Naval Experment. You'll note that the USS Excelsor and the USS Promethious were both NXs and they were the first of there class. Later on the Excelsor changed to NCC-2000.

Arc, Indy & RILMS are al right. That's what NCC stands for. Federation naval tradition is based upon the US Navy, both explicity and by inference. If u look in the Captain's quarters/ready room, the pictures and models all represent US naval vessels, and the lineage has been depicted in several films and many episodes.

the X was definiteley for eXperiment.
