Christmas

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

I dont think explaining the nature of christmas will ever get them to understand just what exactly the true feeling of it is all about. I think you either have to be visited by ghosts of past, present and future, ortry and commit suicide and be saved by experiencing a world without you.

That, or just go without your family and friends for the better part of 2 years. Being at university, especially one which i loathe, i count the days until i can go home and eat propperly, have a BATH (theres only a shower here, i hate showers, you cant have a soak) and go to a pub that isnt heaving and where the staff know my name. Put that on top that in the past few years ive really come to enjoy being around my siblings for more than about an hour etc. I relish any occasion that allows me to just go HOME. On top of that all my friends have been out at their own universities so i havent seen any of them for a few months, these are the friends that i used to see at least daily for the past 8 years. ON TOP of that theres the good meals (and leftover buffets where mum tries to empty the fridge), quality television programming, gifts of games and dvds. cold, possibly snowy weather and a lovely warm house...mmmmm.

In all the christmas experience HAS to be incorporate the present giving, its quintessential, the only thing we can do though is not let the corporations idea of a christmas interrupt your own vision. I know people that celebrate christmas but do it a whole other way. They only get one present as a kind of "symbolic" notion and they get that present before they goto bed. I for one am always happy as larry at christmas, but its not the jeuvinile excitement of getting the latest toy or computer game, i can easily go out and buy any gift on my christmas list with little or no bother. I'm just happy. I guess its a culmination of everything ive missed during my time away from home. Its the togetherness (what a shmultzy word) of it all. The warmth and safety of it all. Ahh i dont know, i'm just spurting out llama bits of poetry now. You get the idea.

<rant>

there is one thing that I hate about this time of year...people who say...

God its almost christmas....I looooaaaathe christmas...

Now thats just f'in pathetic as far as I'm concerned. i don't care how much of an atheist you are or how much you hate the commercialisation of christmas, even if you took away religion, family, christmas presents, friends, drink, food, decent movies on tv...you are still left with at least a few days off work/school - so whats your f***in problem?!! Got a problem relaxing??

I had a very religious upbringing so christmas to me has always been about family, but I work with several atheists, hindus, muslims and people without family and not one of them has expressed a hatred for christmas. The head of programming, who is a muslim and has no family in the UK to see this christmas, can't wait...he knows he gets 5 days off work and some decent tv for a change.

If you don't like your family, then don't spend christmas with them! Simple! If you don't like the commercialism, don't buy any f'in presents....just stop f'in moaning!!

I have a question.

What is it with x-mas and family/friends and being nice to eachother. Why be nice and kind to each other and sign treaties for only two days a year, when 363 days a year the same people are clawing eachothers eyes out?
I personally dislike x-mas for that kind of hypocraty(sp?)

And why spending all that "quality time" with people you don't like just because it's x-mas or thanksgiving?
You have to pretend to like the persons you don't like, just because you're sitting next to them at the diningtable, while the rest of the year you try to avoid them.

What I mean is, Why do it with the holiday's. You can do it 365 days a year.
If I want to see someone I like, I'll visit that person when I want to and not when the whole (christian) world is celebrating some event.

If I'm crossing any lines here, tell me. But I think all this getting together and celebrating and giving presents on a set date is nothing more then "forced kindness".

Be spontanious and give someone a present when he/she doesn't expect it. I'm sure it will be much more appriciated.

i pity you.
If you take away the presents, the good tv, the food, the family and friends you stil got a time of year that everyone enjoys. its a religious time and also the end of the year. Used to be, and still is in places, a time for snow and kids playing etc. a good time of year all round. Alot of people are lonely. Whether you want to see them or not makes no difference to their feelings. They are still alone and its worth taking the time at the end of the year to meet up with everyone. Especially when they live a distance away, seeing family members is a hard thing to do.

You may be a no-nonsence, fully paid up member of the logic club, but sometimes its not practical or convinient to go meeting up with people when you feel like it, but at christmas time, everyones on holiday. Making it easier to spend a week at another part of the country without having to rush back anytime and just relax. Its a shame you dont really see that.

@Arcon

Good tv? That's twice you mentioned good tv. This must be something quite different in the UK because here, it's BAD tv. Well, okay, some of the reruns are nice but how many times can you watch "It's a Wonderful Life" before you hork? We've got a station here that runs that one movie as a marathon!

The rest of the programming is just plain schlocky. But if you're with your friends when you watch, you can have a good time heckling the shows.

@Nick

As the saying goes: You can't pick your relatives. So everyone puts on a happy face, fake or real. So what if it's all plastic? At least thats 2 out of 365 days that 's not boiling over with ill will.
