Theoretically all objects in space have a maximum velocity of C or the speed of light. Also any object in space, since in pure empty vacaum there is no outside influences, are supposed to remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. However, that does not mean all objects move at the same speed, as the only thing that moves at the speed of light is light particle and various other sybatomic particles. Here is the given. All objects must be provided thrust to reach a given speed. If space was truly empty eg. devoid of objects, than constant thrust would ineviatbly lead to the speed of light.

Actually, accelerating to the speed of light is a mathematical impossibility. As velocity increases, so does mass, and reaching light speed would require infinite energy and result in infinite mass.

That why in science fiction you here sometimes when a ship decelerates from light speed the order to fire breaking thrusters is given.

Decelerating from light speed is even less possible than reaching it in the first place. You'd still have to somehow slow an object with infinite mass, plus you'd have to deal with the fact that no time passes for the object in question.

Larger vessels are effected differently because they have more mass, and thus are effected differently by gravity. Therefore they require larger engines, and it take longer for them to turn due to inertia. (an object at rest remains in rest unless acted upon by an outside force. eg. gravity)

Gravity is utterly irrelevant. More massive objects require more energy to accelerate, in perfeclty empty space or elsewhere. End of story.

As these are small they sometimes take more time to move a larger vessel, which has a much larger center of gravity than a starfighter.

Centers of gravity are
a) Points, and cannot be "larger",
b) Not necessarily related to gravity, despite the name, and
c) Not even remotely pertinent

That is all.

Incidentally, kick ass models, Kurgan. Keep up the good work.

I've gotta admit, I don't see the point of so many frigate/destroyer/cruiser/battleship/dreadnought/death star/rocket powered planet capital ship mods without someone working out a new "turret cam" interface, or even AI controlled turrets.
For that matter, if people plan on using Romulan Warbirds like Corsair Titans, there really should be some kind of transporter/docking ring/captain's yacht setup for landing which doesn't involve trying to fit the thing into the Bruschal dock to pick up a Sunslayer launcher.

I've got a pathological fear of the "edit" button, so I guess I'll just add another post. Not like it adds much to the length, anyway.

Question: Even though the models are downright gorgeous, is there really that much of a point to just sticking random ships that have absolutely nothing to do with Freelancer into the New Manhattan shipyards, or wherever?
I mean, were there a B5Mod-like ambition to change the entire gameworld so that the ships' presence actually makes sense, I'd understand. The most any MOD tries to do in this regard(With the above exception, of course) is throw in a random system named "Naboo" one jump hole away from the robot and monkey planets, in the Alderaan asteroid field.
The end result? You're still in Sirius, flying that Drazi ship we saw for like 5 seconds in that one episode of "Crusade" where the technomage summoned a technodemon using his technostaff and a technovirgin sacrifice. Gameplay is exactly the same, the constellation and its inhabitants are exactly the same, you can't go to hyperspace or bombard Narn with asteroids, and those goddamn robot bartenders still offer to replicate drinks for you, not realizing you've got the Enterprise-D's saucer section, Guinan and all, in your cargo hold, for no apparent reason.

Thoughts?

I'll second the USS Defiant, though scaled down so it's about as wide as the Titan, maybe a VHF, 3 level 10 guns under each wing (6 in total), 2 torpedo launchers under the main section, counter measures and mines, 120 Cargo, costing 700,000+

If any one can scale down the whitestar so it's about the width of a Titan and the length of the Eagle, and basically make it into a VHF rather than a cruiser, that'd be nice.

Hey.. What about the Flying space bus from the movie Space Balls...

Post Fri Jun 06, 2003 1:38 am

Vicious.. just wee comments on what I will only call 'theory' for lack of a better word.. maybe hypothesis I suppose since it has never been tested...

Anywho, 'theoretically' keep mass of an object constant, relevant to the 'outside' universe, (mass nullifying energy field... somewhat ala idea of a star trek warp field to give the best current example) any thrust would propel said object easily past the speed of light... also acceleration would not be relevant, as zero mass would mean ANY thrust would cause infinite acceleration...and lets not imagine what would happen to anyone *inside* the object if that field were to dissipate mid-flight. As far as I know, due to the lack of mass, time dilation would not be a factor for the object either, as space-time would not warp around the object due to exponentially increasing mass as it approaches (or surpasses) C.

Anyway, just saw that as interesting to discuss. I'm a freak about ideas for faster than light travel, but not trying to refute any statements or anything.

Yes, I would seriously enjoy flying a defiant in freelancer.. though I think there is a team currently working on a Star Trek TC, and to agree with Vicious, crossing multiple sci-fi universes doesn't make much sense, aside from just saying 'wow cool, I'm flying a white-star' while a tie bomber throws a proton torpedo up your rear, and an intrepid-class starship makes minced meat of a star destroyer without flinching in the background.

Oh dear I've gone and incited a flame war..

Tsk, what about Freespace and freespace 2 ships, I wanna see the Aeolis class cruiser, the ravana and deamon class shivan destroyers as well as the GTVA Collosus, that 6km beast would kick ass. Also hows about some of the fighters, such as the erineyes class, the mara etc. Imo Freespace has some of the most bitchin ships ever!

Noone appreciates the beaut design of the Myrmidon from FS2, just cause its the first ship you can pilot, and what about the Medusa, I LOVE the Medusa, as for the big cruisers from FS2, its not the best idea I've ever heard, no offense, even though I do like the designs, they would be a b**ch to get around, it'd be like flying the Death Star...Let's see....the Loki would be nice, it could be an interceptor class ship if anyone is willing to make it, the Zeus is nice too, though its not my fave...anyway, I gotta get back to ModVille now....

Just had a bit of a flashback when someone mentioned a car. In the Movie Heavy Metal there was a car that was either an early corvette or a T-bird that was dropped from orbit. The driver pilot simply wore a space suit in the convertible and parachuted the last part before landing and driving away! Just a thought.

We're sorry but the number that you have dialed is imaginary.... Please turn your phone 90 degrees and try again.

I don't know how right or legal it is to steal from other games that are fairly current, but how about some of the ships from Dark Space? Personally, I love the UGTO Heavy Supply Ship and Engineering Ship:

Bendarr, yea I remember. The Hawk in Space 1999 was the earth fighter. It was seen in a couple of episodes. Alan, the premier piolt for Moonbase Alpha, and #1 reason "Eagle 1" kept being destroyed every other episode. Remarked that an Eagle did not stand a chance againt a Hawk, as it was the most advanced fighter in earth's arsenal. While the eagle was the workhorse.

Now the really sad part. I remember it from the original episode, not a fan page.
Or a rental.

wat would be pretty sweet is if someone could make a mod so that u could take over the battleships in freelancer & pilot them yeah it maybe a little unfair when all the ships are taken but its just as bad as people downloading the nomad battle cruiser & not telling where to get it. if anyone knows where to get it & others i'd appreciate it.

I saw Matrix: Reloaded a when it came out and like a week ago I saw this thread. The movie showed the Nebachunezzar (Morpheus's ship) and I thought it looked cool. Maybe that could be made into nice ship for the game. I dont have any pictures but there must be some somewhere that someone could use. Just an idea.
