The Complete Guide to Setting Up an FL Server

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Sorry I haven't had much free time lately so I haven't checked the forums but I'll try and answer some of the questions.

for audi
You can find FL Admin 1.2.9 here
You can also use a remote desktop connection program
such as the free one that is built into windows xp
click on - start - All Programs - Accessories - Communications - Remote Desktop Connection

for dragon3999
A dos window is a command prompt where you type in commands instead of using your mouse in a graphical interface to make a program do what you want. This was the way computers use to be operated in the old days
click on - start - All Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt

for andy13426
To have a system only for admins you either have to make it yourself or use a mod that already has one in the mod. Don't ask me which mod's have that I don't remember, you'll have to look in the download section and find one, sorry!
Same thing with a station that sells all the old battleships, you either have to edit them in or use a mod that already has that feature. The mod manager has such a mod built in with the other mods that come with the mod manager.
There are other mod's that have battleships, look in the download section.

for Reavenclaw
Try the Server Operators Mod version 2 made by Chips
http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/download/download.asp?id=794
This mod will allow server admins to select the following for starting players...
Their ship
Their location
Their starting money
Their reputation (faction allegiance)
If NPC's have regenerating shields
Do you want to open up Alaska and other systems
Put some people in those systems
Add some Nomad invaders

for vystral
Yes first start the Freelancer Mod Manager and activate the mod or mods that you want to use, close the Mod Manager, then start up flserver.exe and then start Freelancer.

Any other questions? Post them and someone will try and give you an answer.

Thank you for the help!!

Well, I have been running a dedicated server with absolutely no problems for a while now.
I recently upgraded my server to use the Dicovery 4.80 mod, and everything runs smooth...

What may be the problem, you ask!

Well, I then set up ANOTHER server on another computer in my network to run the TNG 2.7 mod.
This works fine as well.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM:
Although both mods (TNG 2.7 and Disco 4.80) run perfectly on their own, they WILL NOT SHOW as two separate servers on the global list

They are on two separate computers, to simplify, I will give you a breakdown of my setup...

Computer 1:
Freelancer Discovery 4.80
IP (LAN) xxx.xxx.x.35
port 2302

Computer 2:
Freelancer TNG 2.7
IP (LAN) xxx.xxx.x.33
port 2303

When starting either version, I start with the command line option /P [port number (either 2302 0r 2303 as applicable)

On my router, I have port 2302 pointing at xxx.35 and port 2303 at xxx.33

The big question is, does the master server only recognize WAN IP addresses as separate servers, and not (for example) 81.178.98.49:2302 as one server and 81.178.98.49:2303 as another?

Even when attempting to connect via LAN it only shows as ONE server, and seems to flick between version numbers.

Any helpful suggestions please?

It depends on if the mod changes the version/build number.

If it changes the version/build number, you can only connect to servers with the same server/build number. Freelancer.exe has to have the same version/build number as the FLServer.exe of the server you want to connect to.

If you're just playing by yourself, you don't need to worry about it.

Bladerunner, don't know if you got your answer but I certainly have encountered your problem before. The short answer is you can't do what you want to do (two servers on the same LAN) without two Internet (not LAN) IP addresses.

Regardless of the different ports on your LAN, the FL global server merely sees server info coming from your one Internet IP address. Sometimes it will be one server in the list, sometimes another, depends on when your servers refresh the FL global list server. I used to have this when I had two servers. I ended up getting a dual WAN gateway (Xincom XC-DPG502) and two ADSL lines. This means I have one LAN but have two pipes to the Internet and thus two Internet IP addresses. I also have to tightly bind the server's fixed LAN IP address to the specific Internet pipe (ADSL line) I want but that's just details.

Nevertheless your setup works fine for any players connected to your LAN (but not from the Internet). In your LAN you have both different ports and different IP addresses and thus the FL client (the FL game) can detect those servers seperately in it's FL server list.

Help! I've wasrted 3 days of my life trying to setup a freelancer server and I'm at my wits end I Start the server but it doesnt appear on the global server list. I have opened UDP ports 2300-2400 on the server but still no luck. Ive tried connecting to the server using freelancer.exe -s<internetip>:<port> but that didnt work either. I upgraded to server 1.1, but still no luck. I have also tried running the server on another machine with NO firewall at all, but .... youve guessed it no luck either. I cant help feeling there's something really basic im not doing, or doing wrong. Please help me out before i shoot myself

Here's what I wish to do. I want my server to run as a Windows Service. I want to restart my computer nightly and have the flserver restart automatically unattended. I have done this successfully with Teamspeak, and I actually had this working with Freelancer until a Mod I was using proved to be incomplete. Now I'm going back to 1.0 and having problems.

I have tried following this microsoft tutorial:
How To Create a User-Defined Service
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137890

I've tried adding the /c and /2303 or /p2302 switches or whichever they are. Any documentation on the FlServer.exe file would be appreciated.

I've tried using flmonitor found here:
http://iain.cx/articles/flmonitor/
which actually worked once before.

If I follow the flmonitor tutorial, it says that the first time you run the service, the Eula agreement will appear, and then allow you to configure the server. It did this the first time, and now it does not show. The service just starts successfully and runs in the background. No matter what I try, the game will not show up on my client browser. I can't figure out how to configure the server again and still have it run as a service.

Has anyone else had this problem? This has been driving me nuts for days now!

Hi, I have the same problem as Bar2D2 on page 2 so to quote his reply word for word:

I had my server disconnected from my LAN a couple of days. It haz been working fine before.
Now it wont show itself on my LAN at all in the listing az a LAN server. It shows itself az an Internet server with my external IP! Itz impossible to connect (time-out).
Does anyone know wth happened? I didnt change a thing in my network, but tried everything from changing router, switchs, deleting MODs, reinstalling FL and firewall........
FLping gives a result in my LAN, but with a ridiculous high ping......
HELP?

firewall config and check your routers 2302 port is open to TCP and UDP and your firewall for that matter

www.mod.pff-clan.us

Openlancer

@ cheese on toast

my firewall is disabled and my router is configured to allow tcp/udp connections from ports 2300-2400...still no luck. It doesn't show up on the LAN list at all.

*edit: if it helps my FLServer console looks like this:
