The Complete Guide to Setting Up an FL Server

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Prolifik,

My server is set up to automatically start the FLserve after a crash or reboot. Here is how I did it:

1st I use IonCross Server operator, so I set the PC up to run only one account and auto log in on boot up. Then set IFSO, My remote Desktop server, and Tiny upload (My FLstat uploader program) to start up with the puter (Put it in the Start>All programs>Start Up folder).

Reboot and viola!

The only hang I have is the password for the uploader to access my website keeps dropping all but the first three characters, but that is ok as I check the thing regularly.

Anything you want to automatically start up is easily done by dropping it in that folder from your start menu.

If there is a better way to do this, someone feel free to chime in. Im no expert I am just relating what I did.

Ok here is an issue I am having and can't figure it out. I am trying to run a modded server. Anytime anyone trys to create a char it tells them the name is already in use. I have tried reloading everything and still no good. I have tryed with and without FLShell and still no good. The only PC that can create a char without gettining this message is the PC running the server.

Okay. That explains a lot about the connections needed, but, what I need to know is how to set my player file as the admin on my server. How would i do that? Sorry if its a dumb question but I'm new to the server part of Freelancer.

Hi, Like a few others I am having trouble hosting a server.
I have tried harriers teqnique. but with this what is the purpose of adding the ip address to the "server" the -s obviously removes the start up movies (thank you handy to have) and what ip address should i be adding here? the lan or isp one? (tried both)

I can start the server no problem. but no-one can connect. the usual problem of apparent connection errors. I would like to be able to both play and host of the one computer (as the other has vista...will deal with that later lol) & also have a few mates join in at the same time from the internet.
I have 2 computers going to router(dynamic) then into adsl modem (static). i have port forwarded the router. the modem has no firewall softwware but does have other stuff. I can bridge if that is the issue be but want advice 1st as I dont want to stuff anything up on my modem.

As Funkmaster says on page one I also have the mac address listed when I see my server. Rather than my I.P. no-one seemed to address this. My friend said he sees my ip so maybe this is normal???

Earendil's sticky is great if you want to set up everything at once. But at this stage I want to get the basics working then i'll worry about the actual admin side of it later or modding for that matter.

Any help would be appreciated.

OK worked out some kinks, turn off tcp/ip6 if you see the mac address. This seems to fix that issue so you can then join your own multiplayer lan network.

I have worked out the reason why no-one can join my server. I set it up, My mate can see it but not connect, he uses the ip address from the global list and pings it, connection times out. Tracert also times out just before finding my computer (very handy if i decide to hack the pentagon lmao) The reason for this is seems to be that I have a local and a remote Ip address. I have no idea at this stage what this means but my local is what FL is running on and can't be pinged, my remote can be pinged. Can i force flserver to run on the remote address? no idea Will test and post results. If anyone knows anything about ip's and know what / why there are 2 i would love to know

Ok my connection went from pc, to router, to adsl modem.
Easiest solution, remove the router from the chain. Now it works. I do need to work out how to configure the router properly as I want to host on my laptop once i remove vista. And that uses wireless conection to my router.

This is the Microsoft KB entry on Freelancer's ports.

Hope that helps. It's actually harder than it seems to find the information needed to actually open the correct ports. The instructions someone posted on how to open ports on a Linksys router can be generalized to non-Linksys ones, incidentally.
