Having a JH materialize in front of or near your ship would indeed be pretty neat. Something like that reminds me of Freespace 2, where your ship's jumpdrive kinda ripped a wormhole from one part of space to another. You could literally fly right into the hole (which didn't look a lot different from a whitish-blue JH -- ah, actaully the glowing 'hazard' (i think it's "bl_hazard" in solararch.ini) near Benford Station in the Story fits the description almost perfectly.

As everyone has said, this would truly be an awesome breakthrough. I am not much help at all in this area; sorry. But keep up the hard work; I really hope it will pay off

As Ro9ue said, This would be an incredable breakthrough, and in the freelancer universe you could consider yourselves obscure researchers in the voids of space tinkering with god knows what with god knows who, breaking rules and writing new ones. Advancements from the void, such as fighter based jump technology, to revolutionize the space fairing industry. Yes, if this device was a commodity it would be very expensive, becuase the house corp that regulates tradelane and jump gate tech would buy it out from you and sell it for very high price, or which would be more likely, there would be a jumpgate to a system, out of the way, small , hidden, in a little corner near Liberty space, and bretonia, closer to liberty, If you could find this jumpgate, you would beable to jump to this system, in such a system, lies a small whie dwarf, a spatial distortion similer to the one found in the NY system in the nebula, and a small planet with one orbital station, on that planet would be a research depot which has inside, in the equipment dealer, a eXperimental Jumpdrive aka on the id cards at least as the XJ-35 Hyperspace vortex generator or lovengly called a JumpDrive. There Diplomats, hustlers, explorers, traders, entrepeneurs, businessmen, wanderers outcasts, whoever would happen upon this secret place and be willing to purchase the product which you make available. And then they load it up, and fly away, returning every now and then to do business, by bringing you research matrials or what ever such commodities you would desire. and only those who have been there would know the way. This secret group, kind and benevolent. just scientists who's intrest is nothing more then the next advancement.

In other words, if you provide the drive, I'd like to provide a research planet for you.

you could have a mod for just the drive, and a mod with not only the drive but the special star system to explore around in.

ro9ue, you CAN make a gun that shoots a jumphole out in front of you. well... something that looks like one. its the exact same thing, just you cant dock with it. simply change the effects to one of the jumphole things in the effects.ini, change it from a weapon's const_proj or something.
did it before, kinda fun.

look throgh the effects.ini, i made a flamethrower, a lightning gun and others just by flikcing throuhg that thing, awful fun

I am currently lookin at the same kinda thing, can someone paste the ini info of how u made the jump gun..
I have me ideas but it keeps crashing, guess im missing something from the guns details..

It would work even if you had tradelanes. Just don't use waypoints

This would be great for server admins when a problem is 3 systems away and you need to talk to them.

@ The dude who asked about removing systems lines. if you removed the systems walls (i.e. able to cruise from NY to colorado). The game would be slower than the humpbackas it would be maintaining every system at once all the npcs at once in memory.

@ Chips i think who said it. Wouldnt there be a problem with 2 jump zones over lapping?

It has become clear to me, that a hyperdrive system would prove to be a universe changing achievement, not since the development of the Speed Modification has there been such a foundational change in our daily life, our means of travel has been changed forever, Commerce, Diplomacy and Travel have become more efficiant for both fighter sized craft and Capital Ships. And now the idea that Jumpdrive technology maybe made available to fighter sized craft would revolutionize the universe again, making travel even easier to the common man. I applaud your efforts and will continue to support their research project. This type of thought only proves that the impossible is achieveable, all you have to do is have faith. Well said. It would also make Star Wars mods such as my Republic much better
I still think it's a good idea to have the jump holes with giant zones.

EDIT: @Chips. There is no 240 anywhere in the jumphole coding on solararch.ini
