I just recently came across The Big List of RPG Plots. It looks like it may come in handy at some point if - heaven forfend - the game begins to lose steam. Lot's of good ideas to be had there. We've already used some, I think, but there are plenty we still haven't. And then there's the myriad different combinations available to us.

Good find, Code!
(Basically, it highlights universal mythic plots that are employed to set up a scenario in which the hero quest may begin...
Which means that rpgs are simply retold myths, imagining the self as a hero, an unconscious desire to break free of the caging ego....
Bloody hell I'm reading too much Joseph Cambell. I have to go write this down.)

Pshaw i say Pshaw.
Not everything has to have a deep meaning and all that mess. Quite simply there is something and someone enjoys it. Someone may ask why do they enjoy it, but that is annoying. It leads to the reason is x, but why do they enjoy x? Well y of course, but why y (pardon the pun)? And so on and so forth.
I do not relate myself to Dev, i am not Dev he is very little of me. He likes dyed hair and he causes trouble, thats about it. The reason i do this? I enjoy being someone else. Why? Well i'll put that simply, possibility to explore and readjust my perspective.
There you have it, simple pure and closed to the end.

You just proved my point
The self in and of itself is not necessarily the rpg character. Often it is an aspect, thus the rpg becomes a method of exploring oneself to readjust one's perspective. And we circle back to the myth.
You're right DS; Myth does have diddly to do with it. It however is a branch off of the same tree. RPGs and myths stem from the same basic root (indeed, the root of all human non-animalistic instincts...the desire for the One. Yay Plotinus). Though you may attempt to portray your own actions as being purely ego-driven, evidence and logic support the opposite: there is a definitive depth to actions and desires, all of them.
Oh well. I'll debate this with you further on msn. I'm cluttering up the thread.
Its funny how someone like me makes the most sense with a bottle of Creemore in hand on 4 hours of sleep.

ok here it is, my entry into the game.... it stretches the definition of "vanilla" a little but isnt too rediculous. I can tweek it if need be but he certainly makes a nice change to all the mercenaries and freelancers in The Game right now. as a character he could eventually join the fight against mason and his groupies, but he would mostly be reclusive right now as he is still getting used to his new job.... sorry the bio is quite long, but it is needed to explain everything. if i got any facts wrong please tell me and i'll change them, its been a little while since I played =P
Name: Gabriel Urran
Alias: Jamison Truax
Age: 27/Unknown
Faction: Order (formerly)/ Ta’Gue’Led (I’ll explain this)
Appearance: 6’7”, Athletic build, blue eyes, not very tanned but doesn’t appear pale. Long blonde hair in a thick braid down to the small of his back
Occupation: eyes and ears of the Ta’Gue’Led in Bretonia
Ship: A Jet Black Drake light fighter
Bio: Born into a middle class Bretonian Family, Jamison Truax was considered gifted both intellectually and athletically in his youth. At age 18 he joined Interspace Commerce as an escort pilot. After a few years piloting and trying to get a foothold into more lucrative aspects of the business a member of the Order approached him one night in the bar on Waterloo Station. After listening to the member (identity unknown) Jamison knew that this was the career he had been destined for.
During the battle to gain control of the Dyson sphere Jamison’s ship disappeared and was presumed destroyed in the fight.
He later awoke on a desolate planet deep within border worlds and here he was introduced to a man named Larius. After eating and adjusting to his environment, a small town with very few inhabitants, Larius began to explain where they were, and more importantly why they were there. This planet was a small relatively unknown planet called Gammu. Below the façade of the town (which he noticed was populated almost entirely of robots) Larius showed him what his people had created.
Larius, or Xue’Ja’Nok as his people knew him was the leader of a group called the Ta’Gue’Led. The Ta’Gue’Led, he continued was a separatist group of Nomads formed shortly after Human contact. Unlike the Nomads, who were parasitic and destructive, the Ta’Gue’Led lived mutually with their Human hosts, from which both benefited.
He explained that nomads change and develop to their environments in order to survive and serve their roll as protectors. The Dom’Kavash had given them a surprising amount of intelligence, and this was how they were able to almost destroy Sirius form the inside out by controlling politicians. The Ta’Gue’Led developed as a result one of these environmental adjustments. As the Nomads were infesting the governments and people of Sirius some began to develop compassion and respect towards their hosts. They were amazed at the drive the humans had and what they had achieved.
Larius sought out others like himself and in doing so caused the death of many of these “flaws” as the Nomads labeled them. He was almost one of these casualties, but his bodyguards sacrificed themselves to give him time to escape. With a small group of ten Larius and the rest of the Ta’Gue’Led finally fled in desperation to an unoccupied planet as far from Sirius as they could get.
Jamison had been brought to Gammu because one of the Ta’Gue’Led hosts was dying and the symbiote needed another host to survive. From this Nomad he would get stronger and faster. He would gain the knowledge of the being that would be inside of him, and from this could gain weapons to fight the nomads in ways that the Order could never equal. At first Jamison was wary, he had to make sure this wasn’t a nomad ploy to get an insurgent into the Order. He changed vital parts of his personal information, labeling himself as a traitor to the order, if the nomad tried to return to the Order, he would be killed for treason. He locked the information with a password that could only be changed by Orillion and then agreed to the procedure. He had separated himself from the order now. If this was all true he may never get to see his friends there again. He knew no way to convince them that the Ta’Gue’Led were any different from the Nomads, but he believed in their cause and he knew they could not afford any more losses.
After a short recovery period Jamison felt sorry for ever doubting Larius. His new Symbiote was named Shi’Xiosa, an old nomad of vast experiances and intelect. He was now Shi’Xiosa, Shi’Xiosa was now him, they were one entity for the rest of their lives. The new information and intelect Shi'Xiosa brought was overwhelming. In the course of a week Shi'Xiosa helped him make sense of it all and come to bare with his new abilities and intelect. Jamison created a new Identity file for himself, Gabriel Urran, and then he left Gammu to assume his post as the eyes and ears of the Ta’Gue’Led in Bretonia. His job was to look for any signs of Dom’Kavash or Nomad Presence in the sector and if any was found to alert the Ta’Gue’Led back on Gammu.
Back on Gammu the Ta’Gue’Led continue to try and create a way of destroying the Nomad Leadership. Because of this perceived threat the nomads have mined the entire sector and patrol it, knowing that the Ta’Gue’Led is somewhere hidden there. (This paragraph is here to give this story a better foundation, because the sector is indeed mined and patrolled by nomads if I remember correctly)

Well. That's definitely, um, extensive.
A couple of things though...
1) Weaknesses - Your character needs a kryptonite. 'Cause right now he's not only a well-built giant, but also has these new abilities conferred by his relationship with the alien symbiote. Now, that's all fine and well, but fairness is a more important consideration. Just like Athena wanted custom ship modifications to be minimized (in order to ensure an even playing field), so too should characters with "special abilities" be balanced somehow. (Since the only other choice is bannination, which nobody really wants.)
2) Apostrophes - "Nomads". "Ta’Gue’Led". I'm just not feeling the connection here. Why does one group have a normal name, and the other a wacky one? Either rename the Nomads with something equally funky, or rename the "Ta’Gue’Led" with something more conventional. You might consider something which would reflect the new guys' desires to work with humans. "Protectors" or "Guardians", perhaps? I suppose you could also do both, i.e. translate "Ta’Gue’Led" to English and "Nomad" to Weirdish so we (the authors) can use whichever we prefer should the need arise.
Don't mind me though. The first point is more important and I do urge you to give it some serious consideration. The second is a more stylistic thing which you can ignore if you'd like.
Whatever. Don't let me put you off, and don't forget, enjoy the ride.
