Where posting at school, Malys? tsk tsk.
So Knight, are you going to write O'Connor's side jaunt? Or is he just going to come back eventually?
Daniel is pissed at GC because of the whole cardamine thing. He might not accept the fin, but it would be good exposition on your character if she would do such things. Malys, what you really need to do with you character is take her some where and let her talk out her story or just think about it. Read over some of my posts about Quigley. Everyonce and a while, Quilgey will wander somewhere alone or talk to another of the characters and he will tell a bit more of his back story. He might talk about his time at West Point, his brother, Rachel, or simply his motivations in the world.
Your character is a blank slate at the moment. The rest of us have kind of given your character a part to help work yourself in, but you need to decide where she goes as a character. Why is she there? Why did she join the GC? Why does she fly that ship? There's a whole history out there for you to define. When I defined a background to Quigley, I gave him some parameters that the others knew about. They knew where they could write my character and where not to. By describing Quigley's moral structure and past work, I defined him as a do-gooder or ultra-idealist. By saying that, Knight and Whasp and the rest know that Quigley won't be out there doing jobs for the Rogues and blasting innocent civilians.
Basically, a backstory tells other writers a system of reactions. They know what a character can and can't do. What she will or won't do. Spend some time and think about it. The best time for me to think about such things is when I'm doing mindless tasks, such as walking, taking a shower, and doing laundry.
