SL ships revisited

Ok after playing Tekagi's for awhile and seeing the SL ships there I decided to take a crack at em and spiff em up a bit.

They were a tad too dark and some of the textures on the ones in tekagi's were inverted so they do not map correctly.

So what I've done is to rebuild the whole set from the Samurai studios release and will be re releasing them this weekend.

The changes I have made are.
Brightened and sharpened textures.
Converted all textures to DDS for lower system impact.
Full glow maps for all ships.
edited models slightly to make them fit into freelancer better, this is simply the removal of gun barrels and turret barrels so that they don't look dorky and redundant when FL modular guns are added to them.
Fully Hardpointed, and will probably release an xml script set to go with them so they can be dropped in.

Here are some screens of a few as they stand, these were rendered in 3DS as I am at work and thus unable to get in game shots at the moment.

Nice work there, I just hope you run this by Samurai before releasing this to the public. In general, work is free to be edited by users, but I, and the others at TLR won't post downloads unless permission is given to the original creator.

???? *Boggle* Samurai studio's posted the pack of ships converted to Lightwave format months and month ago with the obvious intent that it be used and converted for freelancer.

I'm not going to dig thru tons of posts to find it but I had discussed this project over a year ago with hobbes on these very forums and he approved of the idea. This is not a re build of what someone else did, this is a new release using the LWO's samurai studios released for this very purpose. Oh and BTW if that's still not enough I will take the SL tools and extract the ships from starlancer myself thus leaving SS outta the loop and with no credit.

With respect Parabolix, if u read the instructions from Samurai Studios, all they ask is you mention their name, that's all. Samurai don't own the copyright, Microsoft do. We are all free to dive into Starlancer and extract them, you have the tools here on LR. Same goes for all the ships here on Lancers, none of us own the copyright to custom ships, once they enter Freelancer, they become the property of Microsoft.
It's all very well asking for permission but then these ships shouldn't be here for download if people didn't want you to use their ships. The way i see it is if you don't want your design used, then don't post it lol. You might want to mention that to Glock as he deleted my ship pack! (for this very reason, even though he has no proof grrrrr)

I respect perms and all but they did realse the ship pack for this purpose and I can in fact always convert them from scratch if needed. So yeah I'll respect perms and credits but only will get really anal about perms on original work.

For clarification Gibbon, Permission from a ship creator IS required for a mod to be posted here. It is common courtesy to ask for the permission to use a ship in a pack/mod you are making. And no, its not alright to just take it just because its posted on TLR. Even though no one can make money off a mod, there is rights to intellectual property.

Simple thing then to do, is ask permission of the creator of the ship/mod.

what a waste of time
those ships do already exist
the crossfire mod has all sl ships included and this for nearly 1 1/2 years
and if i remember right there were 3 another mods with such ships

Crymson, first of all, no need to be hostile, all I did was say a simple rule that everyone here has no problem abiding by...Not sure why its difficult for you.

Also, you posted a completely new thread for this exact same topic, I deleted the thread, but will repost the text here. In the future, do not do that as I'm not always as willing to help out unfriendly members like this.

Original text:

Here is a tottally new release of the SL ships for Samurai studio's ship pack. What I've done is to rebuild the whole set from the Samurai studios release converted them for FL.

At the moment they are just CMP and MAT files this is a beta release and in the near future I will release an update to this with icons, SUR files, and XML ship scripts so these can just be dropped into almost anything.

These are free for use by anyone for anything as long as credit is given to me and to Samurai Studios.

They can be downloads in the dowloads section of The Scrapyards.

My apologies Parabolix, I guess I took what you said as more of an attack than it was meant to be. Honestly if you had simply told me to be aware that all derivative works must have the approval of the original authors before being posted I would have taken it a whole lot differently.

Anyway sorry it came off that way, I am always cautious about perms/credits as I come from the SFC community where your existance hinges entirely on your credability. Guess I overreacted in part because I hadn't even posted the stuff up for download so you had no way of knowing if I had permission or intended to obtain it. But I can see now that your statement was more cautionary than accusatory.

I will always post full credits with all my kitbashes/conversions, and I always obtain permissions as needed. Anything I work from I check to see if the author lists his requirements, and follow them as listed, if nothing is listed I always err of the side of caution and obtain perms before releasing anything.

P.S. TemplarKnight
I do so love having my hard work called a waste of time, I haven't seen these ships anywhere that they were released with any kind of quality work, they are invariably simply ripped directly into FL. Not once have I seen anyone clean up the models or textures, they always look crappy muddy and dark, half the time they are missmapped so the textures are on backwards and look like hell. And I've not once seen anyone put glowmaps on them to spice them up a bit. Lastly this isn't a mod release this is a public release it is for general use for anyone who wants these ships but doesn't want to go and rip them out of someone elses mod to get them. If I felt this was a waste of time I would not have done it. I do this for the communities benefit it's not like I'm getting paid to do it, it's meant as fun.

Nice work!
The models look a lot nicer when the skins are brighter.
Can't wait to try them out in the game.

No problems crymson, all is f0Rg!v3N as the 1337ers say Anyway...

Templarknight, we don't stand for bashing like that None of us get paid for doing anything we do. I myself am a moderator, admin, and modder, and I dont get paid for it, not even the people who keep this site going (Eraser and BP) get paid, hell, even the creator of the site, Bargib, gets about zero dollars for this. If you don't have something nice or at least constructive to say, just keep your mouth shut You've already given yourself a bad image here.

Addendum, no offense meant to any of the modders out there who have also converted the SL ships for various mods, I just got a tad upset with TK and was a bit too vehement. This project is really just an effort for me to add to what has gone before and make some improvements where I feel they are needed.

I don't see any glowmaps ..., maybe glows are for engines only ?

Post Mon Mar 06, 2006 3:26 am

The glowmaps won't show till in game. Those pics above are renders done in a 3D prog, not actual in game shots.

Post Mon Mar 06, 2006 6:08 am

Yep I took those at work so no ingame shots and was working on another project this weekend so I didn't have time for it yet. I'll try to grab some in game pics this evening.
